Red face First molt and fun times!

Here are my two, Phoenix (male) and Sunburst (Female). Noticed today they are both getting lots of little white pins on their heads. His chest is getting a deeper sea green instead of blueish. Her cere has also gone from white to a brownish color.

The white pins on their heads are new feathers growing on their head

I am not sure about the change of colour on his chest.

The brown cere (soon will be a bit crusty) on the female shows that she is in mating season

When they go through their first molt, the colors will deepen. Phoenix has a lot of yellow in the face, so depending on the factor, the yellow will also affect the colors of the body feathers, making them more turquoise than blue (probably factor II or III). You'll want to give them a bit of extra energy during their molts, like a bit of egg food. There are also some great vitamins for molting (I use Nekton Bio) that will help their feathers shine and speed up their molt just a bit.

They are both super cute and it looks like they have a lot of fun toys to play with! Lucky budgies!

You really have an extremely cute young couple there! Thanks for sharing their pics.
By the way, I think Phoenix is a sky blue single factor golden face budgie. The yellow seems too deep to be a yellow face. And his blue feathers will be affected by all the yellow and turn more greenish with each moult.

He is either sky blue golden face or type 2 yellow face. I think ill have to wait till the molt is finished to tell what his final colors will be. They were both very young babies when we got them I think. Yeah her cere has gotten really brown and she keeps nesting in the food bowl. We weren't ready for babies so I didn't give them a box but I guess nature has its way huh. LOL. I normally have a mixture of seeds/pellets in one bowl, and fresh veggies and fruits in another. They also have a little dish with an herb mix they eat, and I have these yummy coconut flour/pulverized egg/veggie muffins I made that they eat.

Check out this thread....

Your bird's are too young to breed so you will need to seperte them if you start witnessing activity. They are a beautiful pair and at the proper age, would make some nice babies I'm sure...

Your budgies are very cute.

I agree with Randy that it is extremely important to discourage egg laying until the budgies are a proper age and you have done extensive research with regard to breeding. "Nature taking its course" should not apply when it comes to birds in captivity. We have the responsibility to ensure the birds are in the best possible health and do everything possible for their well-being.
