Default Meet my sparkly new babies!

Hello friends, it's not often I post - I'm more of a reader and collector of advice here. But today I'd like to stop by and introduce my 3 wee spangle budgies - they are 7 weeks old and ever so sweet.

The brilliant blue bird is named Duke and I took him as nobody wanted the poor soul on account of his missing tail. They're all just learning to flap around and stretch their wings, so to speak. But can anybody answer my question - is it possible Duke's missing tail will grow in? I asked the breeder and he wasn't sure - my guess is either the other babies in the clutch or it's parents plucked it. The budgies are all siblings!

Yes his tail will grow back. I accidentally pulled all my snowflakes tail out( bird in my sig) and it took about a month to get her tail back. it was not pretty. Her bum was red I suspect due to the blood vessels in the shaft of the growing feathers. I think over all 5-6 week till she looked normal and I no longer had to call her stubby lol

Your birds are darling.

Aww thanks folks! I'm relieved Duke's tail will come in. We call him Stubby too! They're supposed to be 3 boys but I think not - their ceres are differing shades. Two boys and a girl? Or two girls and a boy?

Oh, your baby budgies are adorable! I'm in love with every one of them.

The little baby with the missing tail will have a tail just as fine as the others when he molts so no worries there! One of my little guys went around with no tail initially too.

Full frontal pictures taken in natural light make it easier to tell the gender. I'm assuming the pictures you posted were using flash and that can wash out the color of the cere in pictures.

My best guess from what I can tell from the pictures you posted would be that your gray budgie is female and the green budgie and the blue spangle are male.

Congratulations on your latest arrivals, they're so cute!
Pictures taken without a flash and in natural light are better to more accurately determine gender. From those pics your light green budgie is a boy 100%, the light blue also appears to be a boy and your grey budgie is a girl.

Besides the lack of tail feathers, I also noticed the little fellow is missing his flight feathers on the wings and given the fact its siblings have the primary flight feathers, this makes me believe the breeder didn't clip this budgie's wings and there is the possibility of him having French moult. Time will tell whether he will fully grow and keep his flight and tail feathers. If he continuously keep growing and losing them then you'll know he has French moult.
Hopefully that won't be the case.
Best of luck with the little budgie siblings!

Thanks so much for the valuable advice re sexing and moulting. Yes Duke does have short wings, they seem so stumpy compared to the other two birds. Merlin would appear to a girl then, and Bilbo and Duke are boys! They all cosy up and groom each other, it's a delight to watch. I hope they will be the best of friends growing up too

I've never heard of French Moult, so I will keep special watch for that. The breeder's outdoor and indoor flights were immaculate and everything was as it should be. Perhaps it's just bad luck Duke is like this but I love him to bits nonetheless and will make sure he gets the best treatment. Thanks again, guys I really appreciate the lovely remarks and advice. This is just the best budgie place on the internet!

What gorgeous babies!
I agree that Merlin appears to be female, but don't worry about the name as Merlin suits her well!
Of course, as Deb said, to tell for sure we would need full-frontal pictures with no flash.
They are all absolutely beautiful! I'm sure Duke's tail will grow in fine
Oh, and I must say--I love Bilbo's name, he does look like a fluffy hobbit!
