Default Whitey and Duckie's Foraging Fun

I have been trying to get my budgies to eat veggies for some time now. I have tried hand feeding- did not work. I tried mixing in with their food-did not work (they ate around it). I even tried putting some into the small treat cup on their jungle gym- still did not work.

So today, while watching my budgies at the bottom of their cage, trying to forage for seed that fell through the grates, I decided that maybe I could help to satisfy their natural instincts while also trying yet again to sneak in the goods.

I placed a piece of cardboard sprinkled with seed mix and arugula at the bottom of their cage and then sat back to observe.

At first, my sweet little hen Whitey was shy.

However, I soon captured this shot of her eating a piece of arugula!

Duckie, on the other hand, dove right in for some foraging fun!

He was having a blast!

Now they are both are their favorite perch, preening and having a lively conversation with lots of head bobbing and funny sounds! I think I will do this more often, as they ate almost all of the arugula, with the exception of a few pieces that fell between the grates.

I think they very much enjoyed their foraging adventure.

That's great, Jen!

You can also put the newspaper on top of the grate rather than below it which makes foraging so much easier.

I give my birds their foraging seed each morning right after changing out their newspaper.

Do your budgies try to eat the newspaper? I have caught them nibbling on the edge of the liner and I was afraid they would eat it if I put it on top.

No, my budgies don't try to eat the paper at all.

Looks like a fun time for your budgies and congrats on your success of getting them to eat veggies! As far as giving them direct access to the paper at the bottom of the cage, I think it depends on the individual birds - I personally had problems with my female chewing up the paper and then laying eggs at the bottom of the cage, so now I keep the papers under a grate like in your pictures. I let my budgie forage on her playground and other surfaces when she's out of her cage.

My female budgie is the one who chews on the paper too. I have to make sure it is cut precisely to size, or she will get at the corners and start nibbling!

I have tried to get them to forage on their playground, but they were not very receptive. I guess they are just most comfortable in their cage.

I see your little ones really enjoyed their meal and it's great that you got them to try out the pieces of veggie too!

This time your plan to get them to eat certain foods, succeeded. Both of them liked it. They are a nice looking pair of budgies. Both Whitey and Duckie.

Jen. Your budgies are so beautiful they look like they are having fun... I don't give Indigo newspaper as he eats it. Not good for his stomach the avian vet told me...
