I've been meaning to post this for a while as I hope it might help anyone who gets into my situation.
I got Reggie on 24th August 2015 and after several months I decided I would like to get him a friend. He wasn't in visible distress and was incredibly tame, stupidly tame! My little best mate who really loved me and the attention. BUT I felt it was the right thing to get him a friend even if it jeopardized our relationship.
So, Buster arrived home on the 5th December 2015. He was from the same breeder as Reggie and even though I was pretty sure he would be top notch, he went straight into the spare room for quarantine. It was a bit tricky over Christmas as we then had to have quarantine at my mums house (we used separate cars!) but we got through it. Buster was hand tame and showed signs of becoming silly tame a lot sooner than Reggie did, he was paying with his toys when I got him and he was only 5 weeks old! Step up was never a problem but leaving his cage was and he would jump right back in to his perch. Buster started to show a lot of improvement when socialized and after 30 days we had reached the minimum (depending where you read it!) quarantine time. We decided that was enough for the sake of Busters happiness (I am not saying 30 days is enough, but that was our choice - had I got a family who could socialize with Buster in the spare room more frequently we would have gone to the 60 days)
Last night they met for the first time!! At first through the cages and then under a lot of supervision I let them meet on the coffee table. Success!! After several hours of bickering, Reggie started to groom Buster
Even though Buster is quite young he is feisty and was standing his ground showing Reggie he wanted to be boss, which was actually pointless as Reggie was the sweetest darling and kept giving him kisses and treated him like a favourite toy (with a few kicks! Good job I trimmed his nails new years day!). It was actually very funny to watch poor Reggie talk (whose a good boy, gimme a kiss, kiss!) to a 'toy' and that toy give him some grief back!
Anyway, tonight will be day two when they can meet at the coffee table again. I hope to keep this post running with regular updates as I know when I was considering a second bird I would have loved to read something like this. A lot of my concern was for myself as Reggie is incredibly loving and I am his mate, if he wasn't so friendly I wouldn't have hesitated like I did.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this post and it can help. I am obviously biased, but they are the cutest funniest little budgies and I think together they are going to be a massive handful!
