Default Separated Girls - Update

We have now passed 2 weeks with the gender separation of my little flock. The boys are absolutely fine with all this but it has been slow going with the hens. Since I started playing aviary sounds to them 4 days ago things have improved - they are more active and coming out of the cage again, and being very friendly towards eachother. They are still more subdued than when the boys were in evidence, but I am pleased that there is progress. Here is a pic of them relaxing this morning - Bella left and Demelza right. I don't think we would have got this far without the fake aviary! Glad I didn't get rid of that recording!

I'm glad your girls are feeling better about their new accommodations and are even ready for a session of synchronized preening!

They look quite content during their preening session.
I'm glad things have improved for the girls and hope things continue to progress well.

I'm so glad that things have progressed well and it seems the girls, too, will learn to thrive with each other

Great update! And I love the picture, too, they're so fluffy

What was the girls response to being separated?

Errm... the post and the pic is all about the girls Cozette! But if you mean at the point of separation, they were very quiet, subdued and inactive. The boys on the other hand (no pic today) adapted almost immediately.

Good job on converting the girls into preen and proper ladies, Simon.

They didn't call to the boys?

Yes they did, Cozette, and the boys called back, but that only lasted 2 or 3 days. They are all still within earshot of eachother but in separate rooms. I must say I was surprised that all the calling stopped so soon.

I have ordered a new cage for the girls that is much lighter - in fact it is the same model the boys have. The top section of the girls' current cage weighs 25 kilos and it is giving me quite serious neck and back problems when cleaning.

Now that it seems the separation will be permanent, I feel able to tackle these practical issues. I am now looking at working towards having the two cages together in the same room, with separate flight times. We are a few weeks off that though! I want the girls to be completely content together first, and that does seem to be happening now.

And the boys? They are embarrassingly happy with the new situation!
