Default Budgie exhibit at the zoo

Our local zoo recently opened an animal encounters area. You can feed and brush goats, walk through an exhibit with emus and wallabies, and a few other things. By far the coolest part is the indoor budgie exhibit. It's a large room filled with hundreds of free flight budgies. You can feed them with seed sticks. It was LOUD, but was definitely my favorite thing we did on our recent zoo trip.

How extraordinary! On the face of it, an attractive idea. But not quite sure how I feel about something like that.

There are so many birds. Yes, in a very big space, but much of that space is not attractive to a budgie, so in fact much less than it seems. And there are big branches but seemingly not much else to explore or play with. Except the other birds of course.

I know wild budgies flock together in big groups but have no experience of caring for budgies in an aviary, so am ignorant. Am I being silly and over-sensitive??

I've never seen anything like that before.

Ann, I agree with what you're saying but I think that this is probably one of the kinder areas for budgies that most people will see at a zoo.
The fact the bird have a huge space for flying and have a large flock in which to socialise together and can also interact with people, if they want too is good.
Any time I see budgies at other zoo's, they usually have a small outdoor aviary with little more than just some branches to chew on anyway.

Rent? Hmmm. Only if we can plant some hedges. We Brits must have our privet.

That's so cool! We have something similar to that at our zoo, but rather than budgies it is lorikeets that we can feed.

I'll bet that was a lot of fun

I'm glad you had a great time at the zoo and the budgies were the highlight of your day!

This is the first budgie exhibit in a zoo that I have ever seen. I learned something today. By the person who posted this zoo exhibit. I never thought of budgies in a zoo before. However, it has started a good idea. Hope it comes local to the city zoo where I live.
