Hello TB! We are well into week 2 of Bubbles ownership, and I wanted to post an update. It has been slow going so far. Bubbles is very timid, and his tail trembled nonstop for the first whole week. Over time, he began to relax. He has been sweetly stepping up onto our fingers since the beginning, and lately he has even been enjoying some time out with us on his play stand!
At first, we were just excited that he would sit for a little while without trembling in fear, but soon enough I caught him doing this...
He looks a little sheepish, doesn't he? That's because he's picking the millet out and leaving his veggies like a naughty bird. No worries- today he ate some watercress and sprouts, so we are proud of his good choices!
He even ventured into the office to learn how to play Minecraft!
We were having the feeling, though, that he was just tolerating us. He was in love, you see... in love with Belle. She was irresistible... shiny, always available, and she made a tiny "ding" when she was happy. She was the bell in his cage. When he came out, he would tolerate us only until he could return to his precious Belle. Here he is tolerating us...
There was no curiosity, no exploration. Just waiting. A decision had to be made. Yesterday morning, I removed Belle. Bubbles was angered. He squawked and flapped, and furiously pecked his Kabob. I stood firm. We rearranged his cage, gave him new, non-shiny toys and his veggies, and went to see The Secret Life of Pets. (Sweet Pea was vastly underutilized. For some reason, although he was the only animal actually capable of some form of human speech in the whole cartoon, he only tweeted.) When we returned, Bubbles had a new perspective on life. He was open to the possibilities of friendship with the pink featherless boy who loves him. He happily snuggled on a shoulder for quite a long time!
But, from the way he's glaring at me... I'm pretty sure he thinks I killed Belle.
