Default Hello Everybody

Hello everybody, I'm new to this forum and this is my first post.

This is my little feathered friend Mr. Cockie: https://imgur.com/a/1un1g

I bought him when he was very young and still unable to fly(he was around 3-4 weeks old). At the pet store I was told the bird is too young to fly. Now he is around 7-8 weeks old, but his flight feathers and tail aren't fully grown(but they are still very slowly growing and 2 or 3 of them fail every day) so my boy isn't able to fly yet.

So, is this normal? Because I've seen on youtube 2 months old budgies flying with full developed wings and tail. Should I be worried about Cockie's flight feathers ?

Hi! to Talk Budgies

Budgies that are 3-4 weeks old are not yet fully weaned and should not be separated from their Dad and siblings.

Was Cockie eating completely on his own when you got him?

Did the pet-store clip his wings?
It's impossible to see them well in the picture you posted. Either they were cut much too short or there is a chance your budgie has a different problem.

Can you post better pictures of Cockie's wings -- (preferably not in his cage)?
Have you taken Cockie to an Avian Vet for a check-up?

Avian Vets have special training to determine the cause of symptoms resulting from illness or trauma.
This is important as "regular" vets will often overlook symptoms that are quickly obvious to an Avian Vet.
When you rely on anyone who has not had training in Avian diagnosis and care, you may be delaying effective treatment.
This can prolong suffering that may be avoidable.
The bird will often require a more intense, prolonged treatment with a poorer chance of full recovery than it would have if you seek prompt professional diagnosis and treatment at the first sign of illness.

Having your budgie examined by an Avian Vet allows you to develop a good relationship with the vet in case your bird needs care for an injury or illness in the future. Additionally, it is always helpful for the vet to have a baseline for your bird to refer to should it need future treatment.

Please take the time to read through the Site Guidelines, all of the How To Guides, the FAQs, the Budgie Articles and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.

Truly, the very BEST advice anyone can offer you is to take the time to read ALL of the stickies throughout the various Talk Budgie forums as well as the Budgie Articles we have posted.

These are great resources for Talk Budgie members and have a wealth of reliable information which will assist you to learn the best practices in caring for your budgies for their optimal health and well-being.

Poor little Cookie!

I agree that he definitely needs to be seen by an Avian vet. He was taken from his parents and clutchmates MUCH too young! You'll need to keep a very close eye on him to make sure that he is eating and cracking seeds on his own.

From the picture that you posted, his feathers look like they are in pretty rough shape. This could just be from stress, or it could be more along the lines of French Moult. Please have him looked at by a vet, as this condition can be serious but also managed with proper diet and care.

Let us know how you make out with him!

Hi there and to the forums!

You've been given great advice The poor little guy should definitely see a vet to make sure he's healthy.

Meanwhile, be sure to read through the forum's many Budgie Articles and "stickies" (threads "stuck" to the top of each subform for easy reference) to ensure you're up to date on all the best practices for budgie care. You'll find information on all your questions (including some you don't know you have yet ) on the forums.

I truly hope that Cookie is just fine soon, and I can't wait to see more of him

Best wishes!
