Default New Budgie!

Hi everyone! I wanted to introduce my new budgie Haku. He is currently in his small quarantine cage and was wondering how long I would have to keep him in there until I move him into the bigger cage with my other budgie Bloo? Would a month be a good amount of time to wait? He's a very sweet and friendly little guy, didn't want to leave my hand when I put him in the cage, just looked around and sat on my hand for about 5 minutes.

Haku is adorable!

I'm glad you are following best practices and currently have him quarantined away from Bloo.

Quarantine means housing the new bird in a different cage in a different room than the current bird (as far away from the room the current bird is in as possible) for a period of 35-45 days.

Budgies mask symptoms when they are ill. Symptoms may not show up for over two weeks.
Often you will not even realize your bird is not well. Many budgie illnesses are airborne which is why you need to quarantine your new bird in a completely different room.

It is also a good idea to always take a new budgie in to see an Avian Vet for a "well-birdie" check-up. This allows you to develop a good relationship with the vet and the vet can establish a baseline for your bird in case of any future illnesses or injuries.

I can't wait to see more pictures of your new little fellow!

Thank you for the great advice! Haku is chirping away and seems to be making himself at home already. Can't wait to see how him and Bloo get along. I will definitely be posting more pictures when the two of them meet for the first time!

When you do introduce your two budgies, it's important you don't just put them straight into a cage together. Have a read through this thread.

Introducing Two Budgies

Hopefully all will go well and your two budgies get along

I just read through it and I will make sure that they have a few play dates before I move them in together! Thank you! I hope Bloo doesn't get too territorial... he's been comfortably living on his own for 2 years and is happy being a mamas boy lol figured it was about time to get him a friend.

I look forward to seeing pictures of your future budgie! ?

After the full quarantine is finished and the two have been introduced properly and slowly in neutral territory, you will need to rearrange everything in the cage in which they will both be housed.

Move all the toys, perches, food and water dishes, etc. into different positions in the cage. This will help in making it feel like a "new" cage to both budgies and should help prevent Bloo from being too territorial.

Best wishes!

I will make sure to do that! I am also considering getting a new cage to allow more space for them. The cage Bloo is in currently is large enough for 2 budgies but bigger is always better and I may eventually decide to get another budgie if all goes well between Bloo and Haku. And it may be a little early for this question but would it matter if I decide to get a girl or boy in the future? I assume they will not breed unless I provide a nesting area.

It is better have an even number of budgies when you have multiple birds.

Often when you have three budgies, two will bond and one will be left out.

I personally wouldn't think about getting any additional budgies until you see how Haku and Bloo get along.

Every time you add birds into a flock, the dynamics change.

As you currently have two males, should you choose to get additional budgies in the future, I would recommend you get males rather than adding any females into the equation.
