Default River the Prodigy (Ongoing Thread)

This thread is solely dedicated to a budgie, that has shown incredible intelligence and beauty... at such a young age.

He has been referred to as a prodigy by many bird owners who have come to play.

I got him from PetSmart (don't judge) I wanted to give this bird a chance. The cage I first saw him in was tiny, chaotic, and packed with a bunch of other wild budgies. I looked in the flock, and at the front was this white puff ball. He immediately stopped playing with the bird next to him, and walked up to the side of the cage I was looking in.

Guys, the look River gave me, I swear he was asking me to Get him outta there. He looked miserable, and I was worried he might be sick. But the employee let me look at him outside of the cage in the back room and I could tell he was perfectly healthy, just not as frantically active as his other cage mates.

Ive had him for three weeks now, and we are best buds. He stepped up on my finger within the 3 days, and since then is a pro at stepping up, sitting on shoulders, and being adorable. He is an awesome companion, and I never thought I'd get that from a bird. He wants to walk all around the house with me, watch tv, play on the computer, and eat millet. He has never bitten me. I didn't clip his wings, and his flying skills are impressive. I haven't taught him to land on my finger... but we have already made good progress I think

HE WONT EAT TREATS OUT OF MY HAND!
Even though I'm pretty sure he's not afraid of my hand.. because he steps up on my finger/hand all the time and even runs to it for safety if he accidentally ends up in a place he doesn't want to be in. Any suggestions?

So.... this thread is to follow the life of a Budgie named River.

BTW if you want to share pictures of your budgies here too that is okay. ESPECIALLY WHITE ONES! Just make sure River knows how handsome he is.

P.S. I know I said his wings were not clipped, yet in the pictures they clearly are. I decided to take him to a vet 2 days ago and have his wings clipped because I had to bring him home for spring break and my dads house has super super high ceilings with chandeliers and window sills that may have caused an issue. I plan to let his wings grow back in and keep him flighted. I hated having to have them clipped, but it was the right thing for River's wellbeing.

ALSO. I posted a pic of his forehead just in case anyone was keen on telling the age of budgies... I am not sure how old he is, I assume he young, but I would love to know an estimate. Any input appreciated.

AND SHARE YOUR WHITE BUDGIES! or any other color, I love them all

As I indicated in your introductory post, River is a very handsome pied MALE budgie and is probably about 12 weeks old.

Although River isn't yet eating treats from your hands, he's made amazing progress in a very short amount of time.
Taming and Bonding is all about helping your budgie learn to TRUST you.
Don't push him past his comfort zone.
With time and patience, River will become more comfortable with taking treats from your hand over time.
The easiest way to help him become comfortable with taking treats from your hand is to hold your hand completely still with a few seeds or a bit of millet in your palm.
Allow River to make the decision if/when he is ready to step up onto your hand to partake of the treat.

Additionally, be aware that many budgies that seem to bond very quickly will have a "regression" period when their hormones become active and they are ready for their first molt. At that time, River may become much more independent and unwilling to be as cooperative as his is currently.
I'm not saying that is a given, just giving you the information so that if that does happen you won't be surprised and/or upset by the behavior.

I've deleted your thread in the "New Budgie Arrivals" section of the forum.
You asked basically the same questions and gave the same information as in your Introductory thread. For the future, we ask that you confine your questions to only one thread rather than creating multiple threads throughout the forum addressing the same issues.

I'm very happy you are so excited about your new budgie and River sounds completely delightful.

This thread will remain an ongoing picture thread where you can continue to post updated pictures and information about River so we can enjoy seeing and hearing about your progress with him.

Best wishes!

Thank you very much. I am sorry for not following the rules, I didn't mean to do the wrong thing by making multiple posts.

But you have been the most helpful person I have talked to about River. I just want him to be happy and have the best life possible

I'm not fat, I'm fluffy.

Even though this is River's thread. I just thought I show pictures of three budgies that I lived with (IN A DORM ROOM!). They were my roommates, but I ended up taking care of them most of the time. I miss these guys, but my friend says they are all doing well!

This is Ivy. She is super calm and nice. My friend didn't trained these Budgies much, but they all love each other.

And then there's the two trouble makers... the partners in crime that always seemed to decide to screech every time my RA was near our room. (pets were not allowed in the dorm) shhh

Louie & Annabelle

Hope you enjoy the pictures!

Oh River, you're melting my heart! What a little sweetheart. The photo of him on your shoulder, ready to give you a kiss is beautiful. I'd be getting that one framed and hung on the wall for sure. I'm blown away by how quickly you're bonding. I'm crossing my fingers I'll get that same close bond with my little guys. Looking forward to seeing more pics of sweet River.
