Default A bunch of new little yellow faces

Hi everyone! It’s been a while since I’ve posted. I wanted to share a photo of my adorable new clutch. It’s been exciting waiting for the feathers to grow in to see what I ended up with. Still need to be patient for the youngest two, as I can only really see their wing colours so far. I’m not sure if these photos (taken a few days apart) will post properly. If not, I’ll try reposting tomorrrow using imgur or something similar. I’ll post close-ups of each of them later.

Adorable group, it's so amazing how just a couple of days makes such a difference in their development.

Default More photos

Here are a few more photos of my clutch If you can identify any of the mutations, I would greatly appreciate it! I know it will be difficult without different angles.

Some group shots:

Here's budgie #1. For some reason, the oldest one is the most frightened. It lies flat against the ground whenever it gets the chance while its younger siblings climb around exploring. Is that reason for concern? Also, is this budgie a standard "normal" budgie? The parents are both Pieds (father is yellow recessive pied and mother is white dominant pied Yellowface greywing (I think), so I'm surprised that I ended up with such a normal looking chick. I'll post photos of mom and dad at the end.

Budgie #2 (photos taken a few days apart)

Budgie #3 (looks a lot like #2 but with more green):

Budgie #4

Budgie #5

Finally, here are the parents, Astro (male) and Yu (female). I included some back side views in case that helps with any mutation identification:

I was surprised that I didn't end up with any white/blue chicks--is the yellow/green from the father always dominant over the white colour?

I hope you enjoy the pics (and I hope the Imgur links work)!

Oh my gosh, they’re all adorable! Is there anything cuter than baby budgies? Will you be keeping them? Please keep sharing pics, I love watching them grow.

Yes, green is always dominant to blue, and if you got all green chicks, that means the father is not split to blue, he is double dominant green, which means all the chicks will be green as well However, because Yu is blue, all chicks will be split to blue.

Yu is greywing and sf dominant pied, sky blue yellow face II. Astro is recessive pied light green. Since you got opaline chicks, he must be split to opaline. All opaline chicks are female. (You've only got one - budgie 3)

Additionally, greywing is recessive to normal, so Astro must be split to greywing as well, since you have greywing chicks.

It's absolutely possible that you get normal chicks since single factor dominant pied only needs one allele of the dominant pied (the other allele can be normal) and recessive pied is, well, recessive, with only one copy of the gene.

In order:

Chick #1: Light green normal
Chick #2: Light green greywing
Chick #3: Light green greywing opaline
Chick #4: Light green greywing sf dominant pied
Chick #5: Light green sf dominant pied

All chicks are split for recessive pied and blue. Half the males will be split for opaline (it's impossible to tell which are unless you breed them). All normal chicks are split for greywing.

Hope this helps

They're adorable!

Hi Blingy,

No, I won't be keeping them. I'll be looking for homes for them shortly. I may end up keeping one, but I'll wait and see. It will be so hard to decide which to keep!
