Default My new best friend

My little Azure has been battling a "mystery infection" all week. Our regular vet had been treating him with a broad spectrum antibiotic but was unable to figure out the cause of his illness. He lost so much weight there was nothing left of him, it was heartbreaking and I was so sure we were going to lose him.

Finally I managed to get him into an avian vet who is the only one in the city so getting an appointment with him is a real pain but Azure made it to his appointment by sheer will alone. He's such a fighter...

The avian vet called him a little bag of bones and wasn't sure the origin of his infection either but the good news is his crop swab and poop smear tests all came back normal and he should be on the mend now. The vet decided to treat him for chlamydia "just in case" with a once a week shot and the rest of the flock will get meds in their water "just in case".

This is where it gets cute...

All week it feels like I've been babying this little guy and carrying him around for hours on end in his little carry cage. The vets aren't close by (30 mins each way) so we've been doing lots of driving with him in my lap.
I've had to catch him everyday to feed him his meds and clear his vent.
He isn't tame, we've only had him a month and hadn't gotten beyond millet from our hands.

Suddenly tonight he's decided he likes human company.. ALOT..

He's been separated from the other Budgies for a few days now because they had worming treatment in their water and he'll continue to be on his own because now they have psittavet.

He was NOT happy about being alone tonight and was pacing up and down the cage frantic to get out. I was going around giving everyone their plate of apple and kale and then I realised I had a plate of blueberries I'd left out to defrost. I went to open up his cage to put a spoonful of berries on his plate and he hopped on the spoon, dragged his tail through the berry juice, turning it purple. Hopped onto my hand, walked up my arm and onto my shoulder for a cuddle. Then he climbed down and started pacing up and down in front of Gandalf and Whirl's cage. I put my finger in front of him and he immediately stopped pacing and stepped up. So I opened up the cage and let him in (I took their water out so he could visit safely).

Gandalf was happy to see him but all he wanted to do was check out their food bowl and steal their snack. Every now and then he'd come to the bars where I was and make sure I was still there. After he was done checking out Gandalf and Whirls food to make sure it wasn't better than his he started pacing in front of the door. I opened it up and he hopped straight onto my hand and waited patiently for his taxi service back to his cage lol

It's so funny..

I know for a fact he wasn't hand raised or even handled by his breeder so I feel even more special that he's chosen to trust me like this.

I just love him to bits Even if he doesn't stay tame like this after he gets better, I'll just be happy when he's OK.

I got some pics of him playing in Gandalf and Whirl's cage, I've no idea why some of them showed up sideways.. They aren't sideways on my end

Purple tail..

Found the food dish

Too exhausting perching on the side like that so he just snuggled down inside

stealing snacks

checking to make sure I was still there

Azure is so adorable! Love the photo in the food cup. I am so glad he is on the mend. He is much too cute to be sick. Good job, Allie.

It's amazing what an extra TLC can do to our little ones. Your baby Azure now knows how much you love and care for him while he isn't feeling so well and he appreciates your effort on making him feel better.
While he gains his full health back, may your bond grow stronger. Azure is not only a beautiful budgie boy, but also a very clever and special birdie.

Thank you both of you for the kind words.

He is a very quick and clever little budgie and adorable too but looking at these pics makes my eyes well up because he looks so sickly and awful and I just feel so bad for him. Looking back at photos of him before he got sick, it doesn't even seem like the same bird..

Today I'm worried. I don't think he's getting better at all. When I mentioned the fact that I thought azure had been vomiting the vet dismissed it as medication on his face. When I told him the muck on his face started days after I stopped giving him the paste he still didn't think azure had been vomiting (I haven't actually seen him doing it and neither has my daughter) but today he looks worse than usual and has more gunk on his face. He doesn't look like he's getting better. The way he holds himself just looks all wrong. His head droops when he sleeps or rests. The vet said that typically in birds that vomit you see mess all over their heads not just around their beak but what if he's just simply too weak to shake his head?

I feel like its AGY and he's starving to death and there's nothing I can do about it

He is one beautiful bird, purple tail and all. Isn't just great when they know they are safe with you and want to be with you.

I'm so sorry he is so sick. Give him lots of extra warmth!! If you provide additional warmth then that's less stress on his little body to keep warm and also keep his digestive system active. Can you give him water with apple cider vinegar added ... Even syringe it into him if possible. All good wishes for you both.

Ring the vet and tell him you are not happy, and feel he is not improving. CAn you weigh him and check his weight regularly. he might need to be crop fed for a while this is what my vet did she took him home with her overnight for two nights I hope you have some good news soon for us.

Oh no, I'm sorry little Azure isn't getting better... I really hope he pulls through, I'm praying for his recovery.

Thanks everyone

I'm keeping him warm and I've added ACV to his water but I wasn't sure how much, does anyone know the dose for a sick bird?

I can weigh him, it would only confirm what I see when I look at him though. He's getting worse. His little feet are cold and he feels like a feather in my hand.

Today he has dark watery droppings and whole pieces of seed in his mouth, vomit all over his front. He's always in the food bowl or sleeping. This morning I caught him gagging with his mouth open. I just wish I could catch him actually puking so I could say to the vet that I saw him do it but all he does when I go to his cage is climb up to meet me and give me those sad birdie eyes because he wants to come out. He only seems to vomit very early in the morning because when I come out, he's a mess but as the day goes on it dries and there's nothing new.

I want to call the vet back but there's three problems with that, one is that it's a public holiday weekend and they aren't open again until Tuesday. Two is that I probably won't be able to get him back in until he has another opening and he's a busy vet. Three is that he's incredibly expensive which would be fine but I don't feel like he's getting the job done. It was $300 just for him to tell me he *thinks* Azure might have chlamydia but he doesn't really know. I feel like that's just his fall-back diagnosis for when he doesn't know what's wrong. Heck, he even wrote a blog on it: https://www.innersouthvets.com.au/blog/psittacosis/

It's just so frustrating, I was so excited to get him into an avian vet and now I'm disappointed because he isn't getting better and I don't feel like he was diagnosed correctly.

I can take him back to our regular vet, I know she would take him in and crop feed him, she's an amazing woman and a no nonsense vet but she's no expert on bird diseases. He'd still have to wait till Tuesday morning though and she still wouldn't know what to do with him in the long run.

My other options are to either have him put to sleep or just try to keep him happy until his check up next Friday or he passes, whichever comes first.

I'm just so lost on what to do, my poor daughter is a mess, she's been crying almost nonstop all day. Owning Budgies was meant to be a healthy bonding exercise for us.. not meant to traumatize her for life Pets get sick, sometimes they die. But watching a baby slowly starve to death is almost more than either of us can take..
