Default For those of you interested in learning to Knit or Crochet...

Hi all!! I LOVE how many of our TB Crafters are coming out of the woodwork!! We've got a lot more talent than just being excellent budgie parents

Many of you have noted that you may want to pick up one of these crafts so I've put this thread together with a few FREE online resources that may help you in learning these skills!! There are tooooons of online resources, including tutorials and patterns (from basic to expert), that can help you teach yourself and practice!! All it takes is some determination (I've only been crocheting for 2 years and I taught myself through Youtube videos and many of these online resources! )

My personal #1 resources: https://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/ https://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/

These sites have more patterns than you could ever make in a lifetime!! They are a great go-to resource because they are a compilation of patterns and tutorials from TONS of other websites, so everything is all in one place for you and best of all, all of the patterns are FREE!! Not only are there patterns on here, there are also tutorials that show you step-by-step instructions for almost all stitches

Video Tutorials www.youtube.com

You can search for video tutorials on here for pretty much anything. I have personally used "The Art of Crochet by Teresa" many times for crocheting stitches and techniques and it was very helpful for me to see the motions in action (as opposed to looking at the steps on a page which can sometimes be confusing).

If you would rather have a book in your hand, there are books available at any craft store (and even other stores such as Walmart) for beginning knitters or crocheters that teach you all of the basics and get you started on your new venture!

A money-saving note: if you have craft stores near you (example: Joann Fabrics, Michaels, A.C. Moore) they ALWAYS have coupons available online. You can join their mailing lists and get coupons in the mail to your house as well as to your email. This is a website I use a LOT for printable coupons, which are updated weekly https://www.printable-coupons.blogspot.com/ If you look on the left-hand side of the page (in blue) you will see the store name, just click on it and you will get their latest coupons available!

A wonderful charity: https://www.snugglesproject.org/
This is a great way to practice creating smaller pieces and also give back!! The Snuggles Project is a global community where knitters, crocheters, and sewers make "snuggles" (mats and blankets) for animals in shelters. This site contains great patterns that are for any level of experience as well as locations of shelters in your community where you can donate your work!! I think this is also wonderful because it give you a great chance to practice without needing to be "perfect" (you are providing for the animals, and they aren't going to JUDGE you on your stitch work!! )

I hope this helps some of you!! If anyone else has any resources they would like to share please feel free!! The more the better Also, I think I speak for all of us crafters here when I say PLEASE ask questions if you have any!! We are always here to help Happy Crafting!!

Jill, this is great info! I am not at all crafty, but I would love to learn to knit for crochet. I cannot just sit and watch tv. I also will forward this info to my sister if that's okay with you. She is a great knitter and would like to try crocheting. Always looking for patterns. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for all this info Jill! I can sure use it!

You know what I found on youtube a while back... somebody made beach mats by crocheting plastic grocery bags! I thought that was super cool. It takes like 400 grocery bags to make one blanket but my pantry is always full of these wadded up grocery bags that I'm sure there's more than 400 of them in there... great way to recycle.

I learned how to knit (and pearl...lol) this spring! I haven't done much with it, and I actually ended up learning how to double crochet this summer as well. Again, I haven't done much with it but I DO like knitting a lot!! I'm busy with school right now. I was signed up for Joanne's sale emails but I think I just clicked on Spam for them because I have hardly taken advantage of them as of yet...

That's great!! It does take up a lot of time (which many people don't have a lot of extra most days) but it's great that you've already learned some!!

I'd also like to add www.Raverly.com to the list as I have found many free patterns on the website along with patterns you need to pay for.

I have spent about an hour and half downloading a couple of free patterns to add to my 'what to make next list'

Thanks guys. I have found a lot of great patterns on Crochet Pattern Central and Knitting Pattern Central.
And always count on youtube to get us through something confusing.

I just bookmarked the Snuggles Project. That is a fantastic site. Thanks so much for that one.

I'm a big fan of Ravelry too. They can help you through anything and there is always somebody online.

Great post! Earlier this year I sent my sister some how-to-crochet videos from YouTube 'cause she's left-handed and says it's impossible to learn by watching right-handed people.
