Hello,
I'm a first time budgie owner. I've been reading through your site and love all the info. I was wondering if I could get some help determining the gender of my new budgies. I think the more vibrant blue budgie is a girl, and I think the paler one is a boy but I'm really not sure. I'm not sure of their age either (I think the lighter one is younger) but I'm not sure if my pictures are good enough. They are not really tame yet.
Thanks!
I think you may be right with your assumptions. The budgie in the first two photos definitely looks like a girl with the colour of the cere (with the white rings around the nostrils) whereas the one in the second photo has an all-pink cere, so is a little boy. I think you're right with the age too - the boy still has more head-bars than the girl.
They're both absolutely gorgeous! Have you named them yet?

Welcome to the forums and the ever exciting world of budgie ownership!
You have certainly come to the right place as you will find all you need to know on budgie care here. Since you are relatively new to budgies, the articles and sticky threads located at the top part of each section of the forums will be very useful. Be sure to pay extra attention to the Diet and Nutrition and the Taming and Bonding sections.
I agree that the budgie on the first two photos is a female and the other budgie is a male. They are both fairly young, the male seems to be a bit younger at about 3 months old, while the female I'd say is about 4 months old.
Best of luck with your cute pair of budgies!

RIP sweet Tito (Summer 2008 - January 17th 2013).
You are missed and never will be forgotten.
It's lovely to meet you, Sky, and Chase. They're beautiful!
You've been given great advice and resources! In the meantime, be sure to look through all the links provided to ensure you're up to date on the very best budgie care and practices!
I just wanted to mention that you should remove toys with loose threads or trim the ends of the rope so there are no hanging bits the budgies can chew on. The snuggle hut also shouldn't be in the cage for the same reason, with the addition of a danger of budgies getting their feet stuck in the cloth and getting trapped in it!
If budgies ingest any kind of cloth (rope, fuzzy fibres from snuggle huts), then they can become very ill from crop impaction
If you have any questions after reading through everything, please let us know as we'd be happy to help!
It's good to meet you and the gorgeous budgies and hope to see you around!
