Default Petal/Boy or Girl?

Hi all!

As a new bird/budgie owner I have been reading everything I can get my hands on and one topic I am curious about is sexing these beautiful birdies!

We have had Petal for one month, purchased from a petstore. At the time, the girl told me that the pink ceres are girls and the boys have blue ceres...sounds simple enough but it's really not particularly when they are so young. She told me that the birds were all about 4-6 months but that doesn't seem accurate to me because of the bars on the head.

Can you help me with this one? Boy or girl? The photo with her and her millet was taken the day we first brought her home. The others were taken in natural light by a window (her cere looks pink) and the other photos where her cere looks purple were taken in natural light outside on our deck on a sunny day. I am so attached to this little boy or girl!

Hi! to Talk Budgies

Petal is actually a beautiful little MALE.
Perhaps you might want to change his name to Pepito, Peeta, Percy... or you can have a male named "Petal"!

The person at the pet-store has little real knowledge about how to accurately tell a budgie's gender and was operating from a very common misconception.

Take a look at these threads which will help you understand.

Thank you both so much! I have read a lot of the information on this site...but there is so much more! I can't wait to dig right in. Will his cere continue to turn blue/purple or stay this way? Any guess on his age now that you have seen pics?

Hi there and to the forums!

Petal is a very handsome little boy

As the links Deborah posted will explain, it's young males that actually have pinkish or purple ceres that turn royal blue as they mature, and females that have pale blue or whitish ceres that will turn brown when they are in breeding condition

You've certainly come to the right place to learn even more about these adorable little birds, starting with the links provided. If you have any questions after reading through everything, be sure to ask as we'd love to help.

Hope to see you and Petal around the forums!

Thank you for the welcome! I'm learning so much! I'm so smitten by Petal and actually bought him for my 11 year old daughter. We are "sharing" him but he has truly stolen my heart! He is definitely part of the family.

He is a cutie, for sure
I like his name . I have an 11 year old who named our baby bird Oscar (In my signature photo below).. After much back and forthing as it was tricky to tell even with the experts on this board, we now know Oscar is a girl. We call her Oscarlynn. Petal is more gender neutral than Oscar.

It's understandable that you are smitten with Petal.
He is absolutely precious! Such tiny little birds and when they steal our heart they never let it go.
