Default Help in sexing baby parakeets

First of all let me apologize for these pictures. We are adopting two budgies from a local breeder. They were hatched from the same parents on May 12 and May 14th. We really wanted two males and have the option of first choice of 6 chicks. My daughter chose these two. Would appreciate any expert opinions on what sex they might be. I know they are very young. These pictures were posted to the breeders website. Thanks for any assistance.

Welcome to the forums!

Unfortunately, it's still too soon to give an accurate guess on gender from these photos.

Hi to the forum! The info in the links that FaeryBee gave you above is a great place to start, as you familiarize yourself with the forum. Cute babies, but there will be a short wait until they're old enough to tell gender!

Default Thanks all

We plan to pick up these babies around the middle of July. Hopefully the breeder will post additional pictures. They will be 8-9 weeks old on arrival. These will be hand fed parakeets.

My daughter absolutely refused to support the big box pet stores with this adoption. We had to long and hard to find a reputable breeder. It's about a four hour drive round trip. Wish us luck. We've bred and hand raised African Greys and Macaws but these will be her first parakeets.

Hello there and to the forums!

What cute little babies! I agree that it's too early to tell gender for sure yet

I would ask the breeder to ensure that the babies have been fully weaned for a time before coming home. The babies would benefit from being a little older when they come home for the first time to ensure they're weaned correctly, there is no regression, and they have plenty of time to interact with their parents before hand. This helps maintain their proper socialisation and can often help them be happier and less stressed in their new home.

I'm so glad your daughter is aware of the big-box pet stores and you were able to find a good breeder! Around here, we always try to ensure a responsible breeder is taking care of the babies and treating them humanely rather than the undesirable conditions of the birdie mills.

Meanwhile, be sure to read through all the links provided by Deborah to ensure you're completely up to date on all the best budgie care before they come home! If you have any questions after reading through anything, be sure to as as we'd love to help

Hope to see you around, and keep us posted on how things go!

Just a special thank you to the moderators and everyone else for responding to my daughter Rachelyn's posts. She is excited to be getting her own birds.

It's really a pleasure! We're so glad you both have joined us and its great that Rachelyn is also getting involved with researching before her little ones come home! We hope to see you both around here

She loves to read so has obtained a stack of books on the care of parakeets. She has her cage and supplies ready to go...

How funny -- I didn't initially realize that you and "BudgieSweetie" were parent/child.

I saw the pictures on Rachelyn's thread and the babies are a beautiful color!
I really like the intense green -- absolutely gorgeous.

Here's hoping they will turn out to be males as you wish. :fingers:
