Default 2 budgies gender help

Hi there! I'm new here with 2 new budgies. I was hoping y'all could help me figure out what gender they are. I'm kind of hoping they're both boys since my daughters have already named them Tony and Loki (Tony is the yellow one and Loki is blue). Although I had a couple budgies as a kid, I'm looking forward to learning more about them. Thanks!

Hi, your budgies are beautiful! Tony is a male. He is a recessive pied mutation, so that means he will keep his juvenile colored pink cere his entire life.

With Loki, the lighting and angle of the photo it's kind of hard to tell whether the cere looks like Tony's, or if it's a chalky light bluish shade with white around the nostrils which is typical of a young female. IF Loki's cere looks more like Tony's in person (uniform color pink or lavender) then he is a boy too. Cute pic, but it's not the best picture for determining cere color. At first I wanted to say girl, but then my eyes keep playing tricks on me and I can't accurately tell the color. Let's see if others can see a clear definite color.

The best way to post a pic of the cere is from the front view, natural daylight, close enough and in focus.

Thank you! I do have this picture, but I don't know if it's any better. If not, I'll try to get a better one tomorrow. Tony is definitely the more vocal of the 2. He's very playful and they are so much fun to watch. In case Loki is a girl, is there any way to discourage them from breeding?

Hi Ann and to Talk Budgies

Both Tony and Loki are very cute!

It would be best to post full-frontal pictures of the cere taken in natural light for the most accurate determination of gender.

This thread will give you good information on how to discourage breeding:

Thank you again. I'll be sure to read through everything and I'll try to get a better picture of Loki tomorrow. I did do some research on them before getting them, but I definitely have some more reading to do. I want to make sure they're happy and healthy and have a long life.

Hi Ann and to Talk Budgies!

Tony and Loki are beautiful FaeryBee has given you lots of good reading material and I'm so glad to hear that you've done your research and will be doing even more! It truly is lovely to meet people like you!

From what I can see, Loki is a boy as well, although, as you know, better pictures would surely help to confirm this.

If you have any questions after reading through everything, be sure to ask as we'd love to help!

In the meantime, I can't wait to see more of both your budgies

Cheers!

With that new pic it really looks like he's a boy. Still, I can't wait to see more pics if only because "he" is so cute!

Ok, I took some more pictures this morning and this was the best one I could get. They do not like my camera and were freaking out a bit so it was hard to get a good shot.

Hmmm. I'm NO expert. Not by a long shot. But Loki looks female to me...
