Default Help determining gender?

Hello, I recently got Rio as a birthday present. We're just not sure if we got a boy or a girl. S/He's got a friend called Holly who we're sure is female but if Rio turns out to be female too I'd rather not put them together in a cage.

Welcome to the forums and congratulations on your new budgie friend! You have certainly come to the right place as you will find all you need to know on budgie care here. The information on the several articles and sticky threads will surely be helpful and will be of benefit not just to you, but your budgies as well.

Your little Rio is a gorgeous budgie boy.

When bringing home a new budgie, it's always best to follow quarantine procedures in order to prevent any potential illness carried by the new bird to be passed onto your other bird(s).
You can check this link for detailed information: https://talkbudgies.com/new-budgie-ar...necessary.html

And this one should also be helpful when the time comes for Rio to meet Holly: https://talkbudgies.com/new-budgie-ar...o-budgies.html

Hi there and to the forums!

Little Rio is such a cute little boy! Congratulations!

Even if he were female, it could be just fine to house him in the same cage as Holly. Not all females get along when together, it is true, but some live very harmoniously. It depends on their temperaments, which is true for all budgies

Aluz has given some great advice and resources to consider! Be sure to also check out the "Budgie Articles" and "Stickies" (posts "stuck" to the top of each sub forum for easy reference) to ensure you're up to date on the very best budgie care practices!

If you have any questions after reading through everything, please do ask as we'd love to help!

Hope to see you around and meet Holly, too

Cheers!

Thanks for your help, we thought he might be male, just needed to be sure.

We've had him just over a month so he and Holly have spent a little bit of time together out of their cages with a little bit of bickering but they seem to get along.

Just another quick question in case anyone reads it, my sister has 3 budgies but she's not sure about this one.

She thinks it's female, I think male.

Can anyone help?

It's called Dan so here's hoping for a little boy!

Rachael,
I can't open the thumbnail to see the picture full size.
Could you please upload it as a full-sized picture?

You can tell your sister that Dan is a very handsome young male!
There is no doubt whatsoever, his cere has a uniform and deep purplish colour!
