Default Snow The Budgie

Hi everyone! I've had my baby Snow since December. She's an all white budgie with black markings. I am actually 50/50 on her sex, I've just kind of been rolling with female to be honest. My difficulty is she has a weird cere. It's purple on the outer edge, pink in the middle, light blue on the inner edges and white around the nostrils!! She's an unusual colour budgie as it is being all white but not an albino. Her typical behaviours are squawking a lot for no reason, singing to the TV, kettle, etc. And she's extremely friendly and hand tamed but doesn't like strangers. She also bullies the cat by squawking at her when she comes in - causing kitty to run and hide under the sofa. ? She seldom comes out of her cage, preferring to stay in and chill (don't blame her - she's in a 6 foot parrot cage all to herself) oh and she's approximately 1. Another bit of possibly important info in regards to the cere is she has had a parasite in the past which has been treated and the brown feathers are falling out and being replaced with white ones thankfully. The reason I'm now asking is because I'm picking up another budgie called Joe - who is definitely male - this afternoon and I'm not sure how the meeting will go down (I'm keeping them separated until they get to know one another in neutral territory.) thanks for all answers in advance everyone <3

Welcome to the forums! This is a great place to learn more about how to care for your new little friend!

Snow looks like a male to me. I suggest you replace the wooden dowels in his cage with perches of varying widths. These will help exercise his feet and prevent pressure sores forming.

Essentials to a Great Cage

Also, when you do get your new budgie it's important to quarantine him from Snow to prevent the spread of disease

Quarantine IS Necessary!
Introducing Two Budgies

What is the bar spacing on the cage? It looks rather wide. Spacing on a budgies cage should be no more than 1.25cm or half an inch. Budgies can fit their heads through a gap wider than that.

Have a read through all the stickies and articles on here to ensure you are up to date in the best practices of care for your new friends. I've already linked some for you to look through

Hello there.
I agree that Snow looks like a male.

IHeartPieds is also correct regarding the bar spacings, they do look to be the spacings for larger bird breeds. Just because Snow hasn't got stuck or escaped through them shouldn't reassure you that he's safe, he may well do so and so may any new bird. The fact that you also have a cat makes this more dangerous. I strongly suggest that you replace your cage with one with smaller bar spacings (selling your current cage online should allow you to recoup the money spent), I would also keep your cat out of the same room as your bird, at least until the cage is replaced.

Sorry to welcome you with a bit of negativity, we just want the best for your birds.
My advice - ask the seller to hold onto Joe whilst you purchase a cage with the correct bar spacings (and quarantine cage if you don't already have a second cage).
Best of luck

Hi there and to the forums!

Your Snow is a very handsome boy! I agree with the advice offered above.

Definitely don't forget to quarantine Joe from Snow for at least 40 days, as outlined in the link above.

Also, be sure to read through the links provided above, which include the forum's many Budgie Articles and "stickies" (threads "stuck" to the top of each subform for easy reference) to ensure you're up to date on all the best practices for budgie care.

If you have any questions after reading through everything, be sure to ask!

Cheers

Hi everyone! Thank you for the advice so I've been referring to Snow as female from infancy haha so I might just keep rolling with it because I'm in too deep but bear in mind she is actually he :O we have Joe home now - he's absolutely fine and in a separate cage from Snow and they're talking through the bars. In regards to the cage - Snow has been in that cage for about 6 months now and tried and failed to get her/his head through the bars and really loves it in there. I was apprehensive to the bar spacing too for a while but we have had no problems. I have also had budgies before (family trait - my grandad was a huge lover and breeder) and I used to get all my help and tips from him but sadly he passed away two years ago. Some facts about Joe - he's 7 years old and I adopted him from a shelter he's also a massive budgie but very sweet! I will attach a photo

Very sweet budgie!

Joe's cage is in a separate room than Snow's, right? It's very important to follow quarantine for 40 days to ensure no illnesses are passed on to each bird.

Ah, they are in the same room. We live in a small flat and keep the birds in the living room whilst the cat comes through to the bedroom with us at night. They've both been examined by a vet recently and are both in excellent health. Snow DID have a parasite a while back but it's fully treated and I sterilised the cage, toys, perches, dishes and all surrounding areas after treatment finished and she's in the clear now. As for Joe I have his full veterinary records and I also checked him over myself for any signs of illness or ill health before taking him home. They've actually already met each other as both were very curious and talking to each other so we brought them out into neutral territory to chat. I have medicine at hand if one were to show any signs of illnesses and I know the signs and symptoms of most common illnesses in budgies I think they'll be fine

Okay so an update: I checked out Joe's cere and compared it to Snow's and they're exactly the same! Haha. Purple on the edges, pink in the middle, light blue around the inner edges and white around the nostrils. It must just be their breed of budgie so Snow is actually a boy with a feminine name I think I'll just keep rolling with female because we are all so used to it but acknowledge she is in fact a male bird. Also: I wasn't aware about the 40 day quarantine and they had already interacted by the time I knew. They've been chumming up all day and they're best friends. Joe has even flew into Snow's cage to explore and Snow followed him in and they sat cuddling up on the perch it was really cute. I have medicines at hand if one does have an illness and they have both been examined by the vet in the last week who has confirmed they are both healthy and have no signs of illness or injury so hopefully all is okay!
