10 Month Old Budgie Cere Turning Brown

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure if this should be in the emergency section but I fear it could be something that needs immediate attention,

Title sums up what is happening. I can't verify the age/sex personally, but the pet shop claimed the budgie is male.

Here are the comparison pictures: imgur.com/a/mN4RF

I have not noticed any other strange behaviour.

Excuse his messy bill due to his recent carrot and greens feast!

Thanks, what do you all think?

Hi there and :welcome: to the forums!

She's a beautiful girl :) Female budgies start off with pale blue or whitish ceres which turn brown when they're in breeding condition. This is totally normal and you have nothing to worry about!

As you're new to the forums, be sure to read through the forum's many Budgie Articles and "stickies" (threads "stuck" to the top of each subform for easy reference) to ensure you're up to date on all the best practices for budgie care. :p

If you have any questions after reading through everything, be sure to ask!

We look forward to seeing you and your little budgie around the forums!

Cheers

Hi, thank you for the welcome/advice!

Are you certain he... she is a girl? I heard that a beak turning brown can be a sign of illness in male birds (sometimes even indicating cancer!).

This may seem strange but I'm not sure exactly when or how long it took for the beak to change colour. I casually glanced over and was shocked when I noticed the change in colouration. I'm not sure if it happened gradually which made it harder to detect or if it happened very quickly.

Thanks again!

Besides from the cere turning brown, previously, the cere was blue and white, indicating a female.

Hi and welcome.
I agree with StarlingWings, it looks like you have a female budgie :)
If it was a male budgie, in the first picture, out of condition, I think the color around the nostrils would be more blue'ish along with the rest of the cere being a deeper blue , and not the pale color your lovely girl has :)

Wow, we had no idea, thanks a lot everyone! Glad I wasn't in for a nasty shock that I was nervous about.

It's absolutely better to find out you have a differently sexed bird than a potential nasty illness. :)

Good job for spotting the change so quickly and seeking out answers. :)

Hi, thank you! Her name is Yoyo (although I'm not sure if it suits a girl as well!). I also have a second budgie, Pogo: imgur.com/a/dgRzZ :lovie 1: Who strangely manages to eat his carrot without getting a spot on him, Yoyo is another story haha.
