Hi guys, so I've had Peanut and JoJo for about 3.5 weeks now and I'm thrilled with how well adjusted and happy they are. Progress is slow with taming but that's another story. Anyway, I was told that Peanut is definitely a boy and JoJo was suspected to be a boy too but it was a bit hard to tell from my pic. I was flip flopping with my opinion because JoJo's cere looked different depending on the lighting. So, I finally have a clear pic- hopefully clear enough for someone to be able to answer the boy/girl question once and for all. Anyway opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, it looks like that pic isn't working. I'll try to attach a different one. It's not as clear but hopefully it'll be clear enough for someone to be able to give me an opinion.

On my screen it looks like a pink cere which would indicate a male. Is it pink in real life? If you add some more pictures in natural lighting it may be easier to confirm

Thank you for your reply. That's where I'm getting so confused. Often his/her cere looks pink, the same as Peanuts, but other times it looks more purple toned, or like there are subtle white rings. I'll add a few more pics and see if they help you.

Another pic. Sorry it won't let me attach it as a thumbnail because it says it's the wrong size so I'll have to upload it this way. https://flic.kr/p/23Wdcg3

Last pic. Sorry for all the posts but I had to add this pic as I think it's the best of all. https://flic.kr/p/23T9bxX

Hmm that is kind of odd, scrolling through the pictures it looks like it could go either way, on my screen at least. Hopefully some of the experts will be able to help you

In the meantime, have a look at this link. And then look at Jojo's cere and hopefully you will be able to determine his/her gender.

Thank you for your reply. I'd read the thread on determining gender and found it very informative. Each time I look at JoJo though, the colour of his/her cere looks different. As you said, it could go either way. Hopefully someone who knows a lot more than I do can add their thoughts.

Hi, Kellie

We had one member with a budgie the same mutation as yours and we went back and forth for months trying to determine the gender.
Every time she would post pictures, they would look different than the previous ones.

It seems we are in the same boat right now with JoJo.

Whichever gender he/she is, I'm sure you will enjoy JoJo's company tremendously.

Hi Deb, and thank you for your reply. I was feeling quite silly because I couldn't figure out JoJo's gender. It seems JoJo will keep that secret until he/she is older.

I adore JoJo, as does Peanut. I thought I was buying 2 males (from a breeder). I had read that 2 males got along well, and I didn't want to have any possibility of eggs or breeding. The breeder was pretty clueless though. Although the birds were only 8 weeks old, she was looking for the slightest hint of blue on each birds cere. Every bird I said I liked, she would say 'oh yes, I think that one is going to be a boy. I see a bit of blue on the cere'. I wish I'd found the gender thread and it's stickies before I went to get my birds. If I had though, I might've come home with different feathered friends and I adore the two I have.

It's wonderful that Peanut and JoJo are adjusting so well.

If JoJo does turn out to be female, rearranging their cage frequently, and limiting the light they get to 8 hours a day will help tremendously to prevent breeding.
Please be sure you never put a nest box or anything that could be used as a nesting site in their cage.

When they come into condition, limit the amount of protein in their diet at that time.

They are both adorable!

Thank you for your reply FaeryBee. I'd already read the stickies in the breeding section (I'm not wanting to breed. I just like learning about budgies), so having that info makes me feel a lot better should JoJo turn out to be a lady (which I suspect. Her/his cere just looks to be that bit more purple and at times I can see white rings). I will follow all the advice given, for sure. I just hope both birds start bonding to me at some point. They're not scared of me anymore and won't fly away from my finger. They won't step up yet. They just look at me like I'm crazy. They are very happy though and I love them to pieces.
