Default Gender identification help, please!

Hello and thank you all so much just for existing! This forum has helped me much in the last two weeks while gathering information and planning for our new babies.

We got two young budgies a few days ago from a big box shop (due to a lack of other options), but due to neither of these darlings conforming to usuals, I need assistance figuring out pronouns for our new additions.

First is our blue (Aegir)who seems male if one goes by the personality stereotypes (loud, physical, and silly), but his/her cere is very lacking in pigment. Side shot is included just in case there are mutation considerations I hadnt known about. I think hes ~6 months by the just-developing iris that I spotted in the photo but cant properly see in real life.

Second is little white Kari with the tragically over-clipped wings (it gives her/him such trouble maneuvering ) that is a mom-friend even if s/hes actually male, bullying Aegir to eat when hes being skittish or and to stop hogging the millet. I am having trouble figuring out what mutation s/he is, even, so Ive not been able to tell what the lavender cere means. Including the closest to a well-lit facial shot s/hed give me and two body shots to show the markings for whatever mutations s/he may have.

Thank you to anyone who can help!

Hi there and to the forums!

Your little ones are precious and as you suspected, you have the genders switched! Aegir (love the name, I think you should keep it!) is a girl while Kari is a boy. I think both those names work well for them regardless! Aegir is a sky blue opaline budgie while Kari is a sky blue recessive pied budgie. Because he's recessive pied, he'll keep his purple cere his whole life and it won't turn dark blue like males of other mutations.

I'm so glad that the forums have been helpful to you so far! Be sure to read through the rest of the budgie articles and "stickies" we have around here to ensure you're up to date on everything.

Also, you should remove the dowel perches from the cage and replace all of them with natural wood perches

By the way, behavior isn't an accurate behavior of gender! Both males and females can have a wide variety of personalities, from calm to rowdy or from skittish to mellow.

Since you have a mixed-gender pair, be sure you're doing all you can to prevent accidental breeding! See the link below for how this is done.

If you have any questions after reading through anything, be sure to ask as we'd love to help!

We hope to see more of your sweet pair around here!

Thanks so much! And yes, we have been suspect of the genders all along, so we went with Norse god names and decided they were neutral enough. I love the defiance of the “norms”, as it’s proof yet again that personality is individual.

We have natural wood ones as well, but I’ve put the dowels back in to act as “stairs” for Kari for his lateral movement, as his clipped wings have given him severe mobility issues. He can’t even cross the cage like Aegir can, and has fallen more times than I like trying to get to the swing perch. I’m hoping to re-remove them once he gets more used to the handicap or he gets a few flight feathers back.

Thank you for answering on mutations as well; I am pleased that I was on the right track but I’d have never been confident without someone who knows better. I appreciate the resources here so very much... I’m a worrier and a studier, so the more knowledge the better!

You're very welcome

Poor Kari! Don't worry, his wings will grow out soon enough.

It's great to have you around here, we love people who never want to stop learning about budgies.

Well, then I’ve found a good place to be, as I cannot help researching everything.

As an unrelated side note, if you happen to have any idea, would you guess the brown discoloration across Kari’s wings and breast are natural markings or something she’s picked up on her journey? I can only find results for browned areas around the cere.

Oh, he's just dirty

He'll moult out the grimy brownish feathers soon and will be nice and white again White budgies are notoriously prone to becoming all sorts of colors! We had a member around here who had a budgie the same colour as your boy Kari and he turned pink for a while after getting too close to a mineral block

You can offer him a shallow dish of water to bathe in but it's okay if he doesn't want to; budgies don't need to bathe as they keep pretty clean otherwise. You can also mist the air above his cage with a spray bottle so it settles into the cage like a faint rain, he may enjoy that. If he doesn't fluff up and start to preen, however, it probably bothers him.

What most budgies love is a bundle of soaking wet greens hanging from the cage! Celery leaves, cilantro, parsley, and romaine lettuce are all great ideas to do this with. Apart from nibbling on the greens, which is super healthy for them, they often like to rub their feathers all over the wet greens, which can help to clean them up a bit too
