Default Should Elwin be Elwen?! Gender and mutation question

Hello all

First, it is such a pleasure to be on this forum. People are so helpful.

Second, I have introduced Elwin in the new arrivals section and asked some questions in taming and bonding. A couple of people say that Elwin (sold to me by the Bird Centre owner, who is also a breeder, as a boy) could be a girl.

We don't care. We love Elwin/Elwen either way but would like to know! I have tried to take clear pictures but whatever I do, the cere appears lighter than it does in 'person'.

This is my fifth budgie and I have always had boys and been able to pick out the male pink baby cere as opposed to a whiteish/blue female one. But, Elwin is a pesky recessive pied so s/he has thrown me into disarray.

What do you all think? Also, any suggestions as to the specific mutation would be great. And, if it is Elwen, are there things I should know about female budgies as I have zero experience.

Thank you all in advance.

As I mentioned before, Elwin is a little girl for sure .

My best guess is a (heavily pied) recessive pied, single factor goldenface, cobalt. If the bars on the head appear as more of a dashed or broken line (not solid), then opaline too, but I can’t see it well enough. One of our “mutations experts” should be able to tell. I love her single cheek freckle .

Don’t provide any dark cozy areas such as nests, huts, coconut shell hideaways, or covered food dishes, etc. If Elwin is an individual enclined to want to lay, this will be a big factor in discouraging her. Females can be just as nice of a pet as a male.

Thumbs up

Thanks.

Yes you had mentioned it (which got me thinking) but I thought you had meant it as a possibility rather than definite! I don't for one minute doubt you!

We don't mind one bit as we think she is adorable. But, can i just ask what gives it away. To me, in the recessive pied type, I can't tell a baby male from a female.

Thanks also for the helpful tips re nesting materials.

Elwen is absolutely gorgeous. I adore her colour. I see she is taking Millet from you so I’m hoping this means you’re starting to make progress. I have a few general tips as opposed to female specific. If you can, add some natural perches to her cage instead of plastic as these are much better for her little feet. Also try to offer her a variety of toys, like swings and especially toys she can shred and destroy. You’ll find loads of places that sell all kinds of natural, bird safe toys and perches in the resource section if you need help and they’re generally reasonably priced too.

I do hope you’ll start a picture thread for your beautiful girl as I know we’d all love to see more of her.

Thank you Blingy.

Yes, a bit of progress. Still hates hands but is happily sitting near us etc.

She has about 10 different toys which she likes and she LOVES her swing.

We are going branch collecting this weekend so she should get some natural perches.

She is gorgeous!

Yes, she is a girl. She looks to be an opaline yellow face II cobalt recessive pied budgie, although I'm not entirely sure

Thanks very much. Do you mind me asking how you can tell she is a girl? I can't tell the difference between a male and female cere for this mutation (it is obvious in other mutations).

Females are all the same regardless of mutation.
