Default New baby - help with gender and age!

Hi all,

I haven't posted in years! I just got a new baby budgie and would appreciate some help in establishing the age and gender (and if you can help with the mutation that would be pretty cool too!)

I bought it from a pet store so I don't trust the clerks...

Here s/he is! Definitely a cutie!

Thanks in advance!

Hi there and back to the forums!

What a handsome little boy

He is a sky blue single factor golden face opaline full body greywing budgie. This combination of mutations is also known as "rainbow"

I'd say he's around eight months old

Be sure to have a look around to get caught up on all the budgie information you may have missed over the years! If you have any questions afterwards, please feel free to ask as we'd love to help

I hope to see much more of this stunning little one!

What a handsome boy you have! Heís just beautiful and I hope to see a lot of him in the future.

I wish I understood the whole mutations thing. To me your boy looks quite similar to my hen JoJo, but my JoJo is a Sky blue yellow face II opaline budgie. Itís way too complicated for me. Maybe someone can explain the difference. (Sorry if Iím breaking any rules by posting this here. I didnít think it was appropriate to use someone elseís budgie as an example in a new thread).

Thank you so much! I suspected it was a boy... what made me question myself was the store clerk he was a girl! Figures!

I've named him Link

I've been browsing the articles as a refresher, so thanks! There's a lot of good info here. It certainly helps to care for my 3 other budgies (the little one is currently in quarantine)

It's a lot! I'm still learning myself.

Here's a good link explaining the differences between the yellow face types and golden face: https://www.cutelittlebirdiesaviary....oldenface.html

There's more good info on mutations too!

I don't mind you asking in this thread, honestly, I got the help I needed. But you might get more visibility and responses if you open own thread.

Thanks so much for the info and thanks for letting me share your thread. I was worried I might be breaking a rule and upsetting the admins. I just thought Iíd ask here since your boy reminded me of my girl instead of trying to explain what I mean in a new thread.

The difference is that to be a rainbow budgie, several requirements must be met:

1. The bird must be blue series
2. It must be opaline
3. It must be full body greywing or clearwing (NOT greywing)
4. It must be either yellow face or golden face

If all four of these conditions are not met, then the budgie isn't rainbow

Does that help?

Thank you for the explanation, it does help. I have so much to learn. When it comes to mutations, I have no idea so Iím going to do some research and see if I can at least learn a little.

He's absolutely gorgeous!

Link's cere looks just like my boy's cere and he's about 8.5 months old. There will of course be differences from bird to bird!
