I got a budgie this February after one of my two budgies passed away. My other little budgie had gotten lonely so I got him a new friend. S/he should be about 6 or 7 months old now but I still can’t really tell what sex my budgie is. I believed it was make for most of the time but it is difficult to tell because it’s cere hasn’t changed color at all and is starting to look more white? If you know what sex my budgie is please help! I need to know if I need to separate my budgie from my male budgie to prevent breeding if the new one is female.
Was the picture taken with flash?
Flash can wash out the color of the cere.
If not, then you have a female.
What have you named her?
Rearranging their cage frequently, and limiting the light they get to 8 hours a day will help tremendously to discourage breeding behavior.
Please be sure you never put a nest box or anything that could be used as a nesting site in their cage.
When they come into condition, limit the amount of protein in their diet at that time.
Although the photo isn’t the best, it does look like you have a female. Especially since you say it has been getting more white lately. As for age of the first time she’ll come into condition and start getting a brown cere, it varies with individuals. My female didn’t turn until much later than most. She was around a year. 6 months is still a bit young though.
