Default Is this a Good Seed?

Hi, I have been researching and lots of places have said seeds are unhealthy for budgies because they don't have enough nutrients. But the seed I use is called Trill Nutrivit and it says it has Vitamin A, Vitamin D3, Vitamin, Calcium and Iodine. So this brand must be good for them, isn't it? I also give them cuttlebone and vegetables.

Judging from the bad-good ratio of others, I would say to try something else...

Welcome to talk budgies. An all seed diet is unhealthy for your bird's. If the vitamins you mentioned are applied to the hulls, the bird's really don't get the benefit from it. Why don't you go to our budgie nutrition section and do some reading in the stickies at the top there. You need to start offering fresh veggies and a little fresh fruit to them to go along with the seed...would love to see some pics of your bird/bird's...

Hi and to Talk Budgies!

We've had several members write about the Trill brand of food issues others have had from using it.
This is a copy of a response from the manufacturers of Trill dated October 23rd 2014: -

Thank you for your latest email.

We are so sorry to hear that someone has lost their budgie, we are always very saddened to hear news like this.
In order to continue production and ensure the availability of Trill Bird Seed we had to change where we manufacture our seed.
When we moved the production of our Trill Bird seed it was our intention to produce a recipe that was as much aligned as possible to the recipe that we were previously making
However, as you are aware in the initial months of production we were unable to reliably source the quantity of seeds we needed, this was due to severe drought conditions.
In order to continue to supply Trill we introduced a new ratio of seed which was locally available and more importantly provided a complete and balanced meal for budgies. We have since secured the raw materials we need to provide a recipe that is more aligned to the previous recipe and are awaiting it’s arrival in the UK.
We are aware from yourself and other budgie owners that budgies are not enjoying the seed and appreciate all the concerns that have been shared with us.

Kind regards.

Just wanted to add- another problem (in addition to lack of nutrients) with a seed-based diet is that most are really high in fat, which can lead to birds developing fatty liver disease. So keep an eye on the fat content too!

Seeds are not bad. Wild budgies include them in their diet. The goal I try to strive for is balance of such as fresh/dry veggies and fruit/egg food/
pellet, ground grain source of nutrients and protein/ seeds. Base seeds of canary, white, red millet/oatgroats, millet spray, sprouted seeds have less oil and calories than the special finch type foods that contain flax, rape, canola etc. Even here during conditioning , breeding, molting and raising chicks, these seeds are welcome in the budgie diet.

There is rarely a totally good or bad to most issues. Discernment and research are the best tools to build a good diet for your budgies. As stated above there is Great info right here on TB to develop a balanced diet that provides nutrients missing in a seed only diet.

Best wishes, Jo Ann
