Two days ago, we started trying to switch Sammy to pellets. We're using Harrison's Adult Lifetime Management upon recommendation of two vets (they're easily accessible here in Madrid, not like some other brands that I see a lot here on TB).
Our vet recommended a 4-day cycle: Days 1-3, we give Sammy pellets all day, but put his seed bowl back in for 45 minutes in the morning and evening. If he's not eating a lot of pellets, then on Day 4, we leave his seeds all day. Then rinse and repeat!
I'm surprised to say that Sammy is definitely eating pellets!
I'm not sure if it's because I've been mixing them in with his seeds over the past few months, but at least he's eating some!
He gets upset that he can't find his favorite canary seed in the mix, and yesterday he jumped in his food bowl and dug around for about 3 minutes, spilling pellets everywhere
His droppings look almost normal this morning, perhaps a bit bigger and with a bit of discoloration in the area surrounding the droppings on the kitchen paper. Nothing to be worried about, though.
He has a follow-up on Friday with the vet! I'm sure that his vet will be very happy to learn that he's finally been healthy enough to start the switch to pellets - and, at 41 grams (normal, not English!), let's just say it wasn't a day too soon.
