Default So Sammy's switching to pellets!

Two days ago, we started trying to switch Sammy to pellets. We're using Harrison's Adult Lifetime Management upon recommendation of two vets (they're easily accessible here in Madrid, not like some other brands that I see a lot here on TB).

Our vet recommended a 4-day cycle: Days 1-3, we give Sammy pellets all day, but put his seed bowl back in for 45 minutes in the morning and evening. If he's not eating a lot of pellets, then on Day 4, we leave his seeds all day. Then rinse and repeat!

I'm surprised to say that Sammy is definitely eating pellets! I'm not sure if it's because I've been mixing them in with his seeds over the past few months, but at least he's eating some!

He gets upset that he can't find his favorite canary seed in the mix, and yesterday he jumped in his food bowl and dug around for about 3 minutes, spilling pellets everywhere!

His droppings look almost normal this morning, perhaps a bit bigger and with a bit of discoloration in the area surrounding the droppings on the kitchen paper. Nothing to be worried about, though.

He has a follow-up on Friday with the vet! I'm sure that his vet will be very happy to learn that he's finally been healthy enough to start the switch to pellets - and, at 41 grams (normal, not English!), let's just say it wasn't a day too soon.

I'm so glad to hear that Sammy is doing well with his pellets!

Please let us know what the vet has to say after Sammy's appointment on Friday, Bethany.

I'm glad to hear that Sammy's taken to pellets! I started switching my Mallorn to pellets a few days ago, and just now I saw her eating one so I guess she likes them, which is good. I heard that pellets are much healthier for them than seed

Thanks everyone for your responses! We're still going with the 4-day cycle of switching to pellets.

Sammy's x-ray revealed that he still has some sort of metallic substance in his intestine. The vet thought he would be clearer by now. The plan is to give him a bit of very-watered-down fiber everyday and to watch him carefully for symptoms. We see the vet again in a month! (It's the longest Sammy has gone between follow-ups!)

I'm sorry to hear there is still metal present in Sammy's intestine but it IS good news that he doesn't have to go back for a follow-up appointment for a whole month!

Hopefully when you go back then all the metal will be gone.

Thanks! We're also hoping that we won't see any metal. His new cage with 2mm-thick bars will be the definitive removal of all possible sources as his Ferplast cage has a few spots where the coating has worn off - and we can't watch him 24/7 unfortunately!

I'll let you know in a month. A month! Yay!
