Default Feeding Problems

Hello All!

I have been doing my research and reading through all the very informative blogs and threads, however I am still having an issue with trying to figure out which veggies budgies normally prefer. How did you all introduce your budgie baby to fruits and veggies. I have tried introducing carrots and broccoli to Mr. Cheeks, but he just turns his beak away. I feel like I am wasting a lot of veggies, because I myself shamefully admitting, am more of a fruit kind of girl. Hahaha! Should I cook them first or is raw ok??? Also we have frozen bags of veggies in our freezer, that I admit, on quick dinner days I use. Would these be ok to feed to him? I really would appreciate any advice. Have a great evening!

Frozen Vegetables are fine. You can simply take out about 1 Tblsp and put them in hot water for a few minutes until they are thawed and at room temperature. Then drain and serve to Mr. Cheeks.

That way you'll have very little waste.

The first vegetable my budgies tried was sweet corn kernels.
I used the frozen ones with the method above but I sprinkled just the teensiest bit of garlic powder on them (Make sure it's garlic powder and NOT garlic salt)

Some of the other things they like are:
Basil Leaves
Cilantro
Kale
Zucchini
Sweet Red Pepper
Broccoli (although they shred it more than eat it)
Chickweed
Alfalfa sprouts

There are various methods for presenting different veggies to your budgie which are covered in the stickies in the diet and nutrition section of the forum.

It took several months before my first two budgies would try vegetables so don't give up!

Patience, patience and more patience! Deb is right, try sweet corn kernels. They can't seem to resist corn. My linnie and cockatiels will eat the whole kernels, but my budgies won't eat it unless I chop it very fine. They used to just play with broccoli, shredding it, until I tried giving it to them cooked and chopped into tiny pieces. Now they love it! They don't seem to like fruit as much as they like veggies. The only exceptions my guys will eat is chopped apple, red grapes and strawberries. They also love shredded carrots raw and chopped cooked carrots. They also like cooked spinach, chopped. One thing you can try first that worked with my guys is add a washed piece of romaine lettuce to a shallow dish and cover with water. They can't resist bathing in it and eventually they try nibbling it and then eating it! Whatever you try, don't give up! They're stubborn little mules, but curiosity gets the better of them once they're convinced its not going to eat them first!
