Exclamation Weight loss

I've been switching Winthrop over to pellets at about 1/4 more pellets in his diet per week. I noticed yesterday that he dropped from his normal 32 grams to 30 grams and today he's at either 29 or 28 (my gram scale isn't digital and he moves a lot, so it's hard to be exact). I'm going to begin more thoroughly monitoring his poops, but he's acting completely normally, still drinking, talking, flying, etc. I felt his keel and it's definitely there, but it's not sharp. I supplement his diet with spinach and other greens, but sometimes he just licks off the water and talks to it instead of eating it

The main behavior change I've noticed is that he's been screeching more. We ignore him when he screeches because it seems to be only for attention (he jumps on whatever side of his cage is closest to us and only screeches if we've left him alone for a while.) Is this related to the diet change?

So, any ideas for what I should do? Should I add back more seed or stick with weaning him off? Is there anything else I should be checking?

That is a fairly substantial weight loss in a couple of days. Do you see him eating? What percentage of pellets are you now giving?

He's now at 2/3 pellets and 1/3 seed. I do see him eating occasionally, and he eats all his seeds. He doesn't eat pellets when I hand-feed him them, and I'm not sure how to tell if he eats them in his dish. I grind some pellets up and sprinkle it on his seeds, so he may be eating a little there.

He may not be eating any pellets, if that is the case he may not be getting sufficient calories from the small amount of seed that he is getting, and as you have observed, if he is eating all the seed you are giving, he is probably hungry, maybe that is why he is screeching. I would add back more seed and see if his weight stabilizes. Birds metabolism is high so they need a food source that they recognize as food and if he does not eat the pellets once he finishes his seed he is out of food by his standards and that could be responsible for the weight loss. Don't force the conversion, some birds just won't eat pellets, only 3 of mine will pick at them the others won't touch them and I've tried many brands. Keep a close watch on your bird and should you see any signs of lethargy, puffing up, additional weight loss, unusual droppings or anything that you would consider abnormal, please consult an avian vet.

Cody has provided excellent advice.

A good quality seed mix should always remain a part of your budgie's healthy diet.

I would suggest providing your budgie at least 1 1/2 to 2 teaspoons of quality seed mix daily.

Seems to me your budgie doesn't like pellets some birds will require a taste for them and others won't even touch them..

Your budgie needs seed in his diet as well as the pellets you can't completely take him off the seed... I have a separate container with budgie seed in it and another container with little budgie crumbles pellets in his cage to Indi chooses the seed more than the pellets...Pellets are kinda not natural for a budgie

Out in the out back of Australia the wild budgerigar only eats grass seed there is not any pellets for them to eat..

There is no harm in leaving a small container of seed in for your budgie plus you can have a second container of little pellets in there to. You can't make your budgie eat pellets if he doesn't like them... Budgies should have seed in there diet...

Here is a seed mix I use I buy my seed loose from a produce seed store.

1 Cup of plain canary seed
1/2 of a cup of Jat Millet
1/2 of a cup of White Millet
Small amount of hulled Oats..

Mix this together and seal it in an air tight plastic bag and store in a container and put in a dark cupboard...

You can fill his seed dish a quarter of the way in one container and in the other container his pellets.. This way your budgie will get a good diet.. I buy enough of each seed to last three weeks then I go and get more when I run out.. Do you also give your budgie veggies to.

I hope your budgie gets better soon.. Please let us know how he is...
