Georgie is on the road to a healthy diet!

Since I've gotten my budgie, I've been slowly converting him to a healthy diet from the suspicious seed mix I bought from the store owner I got him from.

Step 1) Fresh foods. He hasn't taken to the fresh foods at all. He most likely doesn't recognize them as anything edible since he's only had the cheapo seed mix all his short life. I may try changing things up by making temporary toys out of things like carrots.

Step 2) Introducing pellets. I bought Zupreem Fruit Blend and once in a while I hear him cracking them (they made louder cracks than his mostly millet seed mix) but he doesn't eat much of them.

Step 3) Food mix. I had some trouble finding a good mix because the majority of Parakeet mixes sold in the US are either super cheap "ramen noodle" quality with bright color dyed seeds, seeds mixed with cheap pellets containing corn as the main ingredient, or various names owned by Kaytee. Kaytee is the supplier of the sickly birds you see for sale at Petsmart and Petco and has had A LOT of recalls over their foods containing salmonella or too much Vit.D in the past two years. Kaytee Recalls Bird Treats and Greens Due to Possible Salmonella Contamination from Parsley Flakes

Today I found a pretty good looking mix that my budgie seems to absolutely LOVE. It's Higgins Sunburst gourmet and the nutrition facts are:

Crude Protein....................Min 12.00%
Crude Fat.........................Min 6.00%
Crude Fiber.......................Min 6.00%
Moisture...........................Min 10.00%
Omega 3...........................Min 0.40%
DHA.................................Min 0.035%
L-Carnitine........................Min 25mg/Kg
Lactic Acid Bacteria............Min 2x10^5 cfu/g

Some of the ingredients are: white millet, oat groats, canary seed, steel cut oats, red millet, flaxseed, canola, sunflower chips, wheat, carrot, cashews, lettuce seed, papaya, pineapple, apple, ground corn, brown rice, soybean meal, ground wheat, oatmeal, sugar (not too happy about this one), canola oil, dicalcium phosphate, dried egg product, calcium carbonate, salt, cranberry pomace, apple fiber, blueberry fiber, celery, beets, parsley, lettuce, watercress, spinach, DL-methionine, L-lysine, brewers yeast.....

It smells AMAZING and looks great with no artificial colors.

Per a suggestion on here, I got my budgie Volkman's seeds...I ordered it from Amazon. I'm trying to do the same and get my girl on a healthier diet. I also ordered the Zupreem. Carrots and red peppers are a big hit with my budgie but she sure does turn her beak from a lot of other things I've tried. I make sure to dice them up into tiny pieces that are easy for her to eat and put them in an area where she likes to play, away from her seed.

I'm glad George is getting a diet makeover I'm sure he'll be all the healthier for it. Keep up the good work!
