My poor Snoopy started a big molt this week covered in pinnies and losing feathers by the truck load. I was wondering if I should be supplementing with egg food if he is already getting a lot of protein from the pellets my guys eat?
Related to this, with a pellet diet, are the mineral block and cuttlebone providing excessive supplementation?
They have Roudybush nibbles, the very tiny ones, in their cage all day which they will eat from throughout the day. They also get a dish of Hagen seed in the evening mixed with moistened ground up pellets.
I did try sprinkling the seeds on the floor of the cage as you often suggest but I noticed they were more likely to ignore their pellets during the day that way and they also got in the habit recently of eating the paper and poop. Needless to say I have now put the paper under the grate .
Leafy green veggies are also given and welcomed with great excitement a few times a week.
Also provide a bath or a some wet lettuce leaves to roll in this helps sooth pinnies. Quite often a budgie will become a little grumpy, sleep more or seem off colour when gong through a moult also. Hope it is over soon.
Hopefully some egg food will help Snoopy recover from his moult soon! Flax seeds are also very good to mix in with seed during that time as they also help new feathers grow in well!
Thanks Starling. I gave them mashed boiled egg with flax seeds with some of their pellets and regular seeds added in. They seemed to enjoy it! The one question I have though is do the flax seeds need to be ground up or can I serve them whole?
