Smile Critique our feeding plan, please!

Hello! I was wondering if some of you experts would look over our feeding plan and offer some feedback. We only have one budgie, and I still feel unsure about proportions and frequency of some things. I've noticed that a couple of afternoons his stool has been a little watery, and I'm wondering if we are overdoing some things- greens or sprouts. So here's what we've been doing...

In the mornings, we usually take him out at about 9 or 10 to hang out with us for a while. While he's out, I make him a little salad with some variation of sprouts (alfalfa, clover, broccoli, or mung bean), a veg (carrot, broccoli, sweet potato, or whatever we've got) and leaves (celery tops, parsley, dandelion, or kale). Just to clarify, one item from each category, not all those things together. The leaves we sometimes clip to his cage instead of adding to the salad.

When he returns to his cage throughout the day, we offer him Harrison's pellets and sometimes some egg food. Three or four times a week he gets a little soft mash with his pellets containing Harrison's Mash, boiled egg, and a couple of boiled veggies processed in food processor.

At dinner time, we remove the pellets/ mash and put in a fresh mix of canary and millet. A couple times a week I add a pinch of either Herb Salad, Bee Pollen granules or kelp granules to his seed.

In his cage he has a spinach alfalfa ring swing. He likes to sit on it and take little nibbles.

He seems to like all these foods and nibbles them pretty evenly throughout the day. Our vet has recommended he get 50% seed/ veggies and 50% pellets. Does that sound right to you?

Are we leaving anything out or overdoing anything? Any hints you could give on serving sizes for one extra adorable English budgie would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

The only aspect that stands out is about the seed mix which only contains canary and millet.
I would offer more variety on a budgie seed mix: https://talkbudgies.com/articles-diet...-seed-mix.html

Thank you for the links to the seed mix proportions! The mix we are using now is 50% canary seed, 25% red millet and 25% white. Knowing the proportions I can amend what we have with that link. In our area, it's hard to get fresh seed, so I really wanted to order and mix my own. Thanks

Edited after looking and thought... I'm thinking that making my own seed blend for one little birdie may be too difficult to assimilate and store. I just looked at Volkman seed and Dr. Harvey's... If anyone recommends a line they use from one of those companies, I'd love to hear. It's really important to me that it be fresh. When I tried to buy seed locally when we had Spiral, I opened the bag and found tons of weevils. The mix I have now is what he ate from the breeder, so if I order another brand I can cut it in a bit at a time to switch him over...

Hi, Leslie!

You are doing a really great job taking care of sweet little Bubbles.

I use the Volkman's brand of seed and am quite happy with it.

I give my bird's two rations of seed per day.
One in the morning and one in the afternoon.
An English Budgie does not need more than 2 teaspoons of seed per day. I have pellets available in the budgie cages 24/7 so they always have food if they are hungry.

I generally limit egg food to about once a week unless the birds are molting and then I give it to them daily.

The vegetables you are offering Bubbles are great and it's OK that his poop is a little more watery in the afternoon after eating them.
That is quite normal as the water content in vegetables is higher than if he were just eating seeds and pellets.

Bubbles is going to be an extremely healthy little fellow with all the loving care you are giving him.

Thank you for the specifics, Deb! That's so helpful- I had no idea how much seed to give! I left the vet thinking, "Okay, 50% seed!" Then I got home and though, "Okay, 50% of what? A tablespoon?" Two teaspoons is the limit for seed!

Thanks for the reassurance about the poop too. He really likes his veggies.

I noticed Volkmans has three lines: Avian Science Super, Featherglow, and Premium Value, and the contents of each actually differ. Which do your birdies like?

Thank you for the encouragement. I think he likes the efforts we are making: he's started "asking" to come out of his cage and loves to snuggle against our cheeks.

I give my budgies the Volkman's Avian Science Super seed and I'm thinking about getting the Featherglow next time as it looks like a really nice blend to me.

Leslie, I can't add anything to what Deborah and Ana have already said

You're doing such a wonderful job with little Bubbles--his feeding schedule alone is proof of the immense love and dedication you have for him

Keep up the great work!
