Default Sprouting - is it okay to ...

Hi,

I want to try sprouting but the only seed mix in my area has corn, groats and rape seed. Are these okay to soak/rinse with the seed mix ? (Ralph moore seed mix - White Proso Millet, Canary, Oat Groats, Striped Sunflower, Cracked Yellow Corn, Canaola Seed, Red Millet and Safflower Seed)

You can purchase seed mixes for sprouting on-line if you can't find what you are looking for locally.

Well this seed mix has no perservatives or anything added to these seeds so I thought they would be okay but I didn't realize it had cracked dried corn pieces and groats. Are these okay to soak with the rest of the seeds?? I think I read somewhere groats are okay to be soaked but I want to be sure? The cost of buying seeds online in canada is outrageous. Shipping is rediculously overpriced.

Also is heinz pure apple cider vinegar okay to spray on teh sprouts before serving ? (I read organic but I dont know if its organic??)

Yes, you can try using the seed mix you have for sprouting.
Grouts can be sprouted but the cracked corn won't sprout.

You can sometimes find seed in bulk at bird supply stores, farm stores and even some grocery stores (at least in the US)

I don't know if Heinz ACV is organic or not.)
I'm sure you can do a Google-Search on the product to find out though.

If you want ACV with the mother for use as a probiotic, then I'd recommend the Braggs brand.

Best of luck in your sprouting journey!

Personally, I would not use that mix for sprouting. The cracked corn will not sprout, and can possibly spoil the entire batch.

Where are you located in Canada? I make my own sprouting mix, mostly from the Bulk Barn and local health food stores.

A great beginners mix is the regular old Hagen budgie seed mix, which is available at every pet store. You can add in other items to this mix and sprout those as well.

Give them a really good rinse when you first add them to your sprouter, make sure the water runs clear.

Soak them for 8-12 hours, then drain and rinse again. I rinse the seeds two or three times a day to keep them moist and fresh.

If they ever start to smell sour, toss them out. They should smell fresh and earthy.

I also am attempting to sprout seeds for the first time, but I am very nervous about it.

I am scared it will spoil and I won't know if it is spoiled or not.

I don't know if I need to use another (clean strainer) each time I rinse or not?
Is it okay to just leave the strainer drain over a bowl ? Or does the strainer need to be covered?

Also, I read on different sites that using organic apple cider vinegar is a good way to remove any bacteria on the sprouts, but I read different uses. Please tell me which one is appropiate =(

1. Spray the seeds with apple cider vinegar before serving the sprouts.
or
2. Soak the sprouts for 2-5 minutes in 1 part apple cider vinegar and 5 parts water. Rinse afterwards then serve.
3. Soak in apple cider vinegar for 10-15 minutes then serve (Did not say dilution , if any)

Should I boil the sprouts to kill any bacteria? If so, for how long?

I have been attempting my first sprout and it is my 2nd day and some of the seeds (only about 10%) have tips but not all. I was reading it only takes 2 days for the tails to come but most of my seeds dont have tails . I guess I will wait until tomorrow. So far I am using the soak for 10 hours then rinse every 12 hours method. During the day I try rinsing every 3-6 hours if I can.

Can someone give me a for sure guide to know if the sprouts are gone bad?

Question

Those links I have already read, none say anything about organic apple cidar vinegar, if you have to switch strainers every rinse, if you cover your sprouts and it also says nothing about if you can boil them or not.
