Post Breaking Ernie of the All-Seed Diet Ongoing-Thread

After reading some of the Stickies about an ideal diet for parakeets, I decided it's time to break Ernie of the all-seed diet we've been giving him. First challenge: lettuce.
As I expected, giving it to him straight simply didn't work (he was incredibly scared of it), so I tried wrapping it in construction paper and letting him chew on the paper. It worked- at first. The minute he tasted the lettuce, he chickened out again. I tried this repeatedly, but he had already figured out my plan.
I think that he's starting to be less afraid of the lettuce, but he still is keeping his distance and won't touch it.

UPDATE: Ernie gave the lettuce a few nervous pecks. Hopefully he'll try it next time.

DAY 2:

I twist-tied a small piece of lettuce to Ernie's cage. I'll keep an eye on him.

My budgie too is always very suspicious of any new things he sees. What really helped when introducing new foods like pellets and vegetables was to eat some in front of him. He immediatly became more interested with the food and eventually tried it

UPDATE: I developed a new method of approach. If Ernie just pecks or even tastes the lettuce, I immediately give him millet as a reward. It seems to be working better than twist-ties...

That's a good idea! Positive reinforcement is a good way to get budgies to try new things!

Once he takes a bite and realises he likes it, you can move away from the millet approach so he doesn't do it just to get millet, but in the meantime, it's great to get him comfortable with the lettuce

BREAKTHROUGH! A couple hours ago* Ernie nibbled just a LITTLE bit of lettuce! He still likes the millet a lot better, but he's getting more comfortable. Star, breaking him of only eating lettuce for the millet is my goal. First, of course, Ernie will have to realize that lettuce tastes good...

Yeah! I'm really excited that he tried it so quickly. I think he's figured out that lettuce = millet, but right now he's ticked that he didn't get more millet than what I already gave him.

Question before I begin Day 3:

In case he simply just won't eat lettuce, what are some other healthy options?
