Default Egg Food?

I'm curious about egg food, I've never offered it to my birds. Right now they get a mix of seed, pellets, veggies and sprouted seeds.

I have heard people say that only breeding budgies need egg food while others say that all budgies should have it weekly. Thoughts?

Welcome to the forums, Cassie!

While it's true that breeding budgies need egg food on a daily basis, this is certainly not exclusive for breeding pairs and their growing chicks.
Egg food is also a vital component to offer to moulting budgies and can be supplemented on a daily basis especially during the most difficult stage of the moult. Young budgies who have been recently weaned will also greatly benefit from having egg food on their diets.
Egg food can also be quite important in terms of providing good nourishment for sick and convalescent birds, as it will give them a much needed boost and make a real difference during the recovery process.
For healthy, non breeding budgies who aren't moulting, egg food can be offered once or twice per week. Personally my flock gets it twice per week.
And one of my special needs bird has egg food available at all times on a daily basis, this has been previously established with the avian vet's approval.

Hi Aluz,

For your special needs bird that always has egg food, do you use a pre-made for that? I've been considering having egg food on hand for any circumstances where I might not be able to make it. I've read on a thread that Volkman's is a good one to check out. Is there a product that you prefer?

Thx.... !

Yes, I use the dry type of egg food that can be bought at specialized pet stores. The brand I buy specifically for my lovebird is made in my country and when compared to the other brands of dry egg food (even international ones available in the market), it's the best one in my opinion and also from my experience.
This egg blend is excellent and it contains some flax seeds, Niger seeds and canary seeds.

You're very welcome.

Most likely you won't find this available online for purchase, but you can look into all the diverse brands of dry egg food available where you live, check the ingredients, the colour, richness and overall consistency of the egg food (and also the scent of it when opening) and then make your decision.

Thanks for the reply! I'm just concerned about protein levels since the pellets I supplement with have 21% protein. They get this twice a week, so do they still need egg food? the pellets also have added calcium and the birds have free access to a cuttle bone.
