Default Average weight for a budgie?

Hey, me again

I have a question, what should be the average weight for Cosmo? Hes a male, american budgie and he currently weighs 34-36 grams. When I got him he was 32.

I feed him a fortified seed diet and various fruits/veggies. I usually give him 3/4 of a cup of seed daily and he eats half to 3 quarters of it. I also try to introduce new foods day by day. His favorites are spinach, blueberries, mango, and brocolli.

This is the seed: https://www.petsmart.com/bird/food-a...0-%20Specialty

Should I cut down on the seed?

Also, I play with him for about an hour everyday so he gets lots of exercise. Hes out of the cage most of the day playing on his play gym.

Thank you,

Goodnight!

The two wild type budgies I used to have were about 31 grams. As with any creature there is a healthy range depending on individual frame size, but 30-something is generally about average for the wild type non-English .

If he was very young when he was 32 grams, then it's possible he went up to the 34-36 grams once he became mature and filled out. If that's the case, he's not necessarily fat.

Approximately a couple teaspoons of seed per day should be sufficient in addition to his other foods. Depending how big the cup is, it could be that he's getting too much on a daily basis.

If he's tame enough to let you hold him, you can see if fat is developing... it first starts developing in the lower abdomen, and it can be seen through the skin when you part the feathers down there. If he doesn't allow you to hold him, then just monitor the seed consumption, and weigh him regularly. Limit to around 2 teaspoons, not an entire seed cup full. Regardless of weight, if he has access to too much seed, he might not be eating enough of the other foods.

RavensGryf has given you excellent information.

The ideal weight for an American/Pet type budgie is often between 25 -39+ grams, averaging 35, based on body size.

English/Show budgies average is around 45 grams with it ranging from 42 grams to 60 grams depending on body size.

Monitoring his weight, limiting his seed intake to 1 1/2 - 2 teaspoons per day and ensuring he gets plenty of exercise will help him maintain optimal health.
