Question Conflicting info about pellet/seed diets..what to do?

I took my budgie Skye to the avian vet yesterday since she's been sick the past few days. The vet said she has an enlarged liver, probably due to a mostly seed diet, and she talked about getting her on pellets, starting with the mash. But from what I've read, seeds aren't terrible, just not something you want to only give your bird. She said seeds shouldn't be included in the diet at all, just 70-80% pellets and the remaining be veggies and fruits, and that after a bird's on a pellet diet, further vitamins and supplements aren't needed. I'm not sure what I should do, as others have said pellets can have too much protein and aren't too good to have alone.

Right now, they gave me a sample of the Harrison's high potency mash to mix with the seed. For now, Skye still doesn't have much of an appetite. I sprinkled a lot of the mash onto a millet spray but I'm hoping she goes to her food dish, and she's not. I took out the spray for now, but I'll put it back if she really doesn't seem interested in the food dish.

I just thought stuff like sprouted seeds were pretty healthy, but those weren't mentioned at all. There's so much conflicting information on this!

EDIT: She started eating out of her dish! There's a lot of the mash sprinkled in it. Still conflicted over this stuff though!

Your Avian Vet is probably telling you to switch totally to pellets and vegetables in the hope doing so will help to lessen the damage that has already been done to your bird's liver.

Otherwise, using pellets, a high-quality seed mix and vegetables with occasional fruit as a treat is the best option.

If a budgie is on a healthy diet, then additional vitamins and supplements are not needed.

The exception to this is Vitamin D3.
Vitamin D3 is given when birds do not get enough direct sunlight and a full-spectrum light is not used.

Thanks! I'll definitely try to do that. I guess I was confused since she gives everyone a packet about nutrition and it says no birds should be on seed at all, so I was a bit lost!

You're very welcome.

I'm going to close this thread now.

Please be sure to update in a couple of weeks with regard to how your budgie is doing.
