Default A foraging method for budgies (and other small birds)

I found this video when looking for new ways to challenge my two with feeding. I hope everyone finds it useful; I'm going to try it right away and see how Sweetie and Lemon like it.

Great video, Moira

Thank you for sharing it.

I love having my birds forage for their daily seed rations and some of the ideas presented will help me add a bit more interest to their endeavors.

That's a great video clip Moira, it shows just how easy it is to add a bit of enrichment to our bird's lives. Thanks for posting.

With foraging toys that use shredded paper, birds in breeding condition may view it as nesting material, so the stone/twig idea is a great alternative for this. Dishes with plastic/wooden beads & buttons would also work well and be light enough for budgies to lift and roll aside.

I'm away for a few days later this week, so I think I'm going to give this a try today and if they're intrigued enough to investigate, I'll set up 3 days worth of dishes for my son to swap daily to keep them busy whilst I'm away. Thanks again.

Ooh, this sounds fun! I'm going to have a look and try some of them over the weekend and next week.

This is a great video and shows easy and effective ways to encourage these behaviors
for enrichment of pet birds. I work at the Phila Zoo, often interpreting to visitors at our gorilla exhibit on how keepers provide enrichment for the gorillas by scattering food all over their exhibit space, indoors and outdoors. Gorillas are total vegetarians and constantly forage in the wild and in zoos. We humans were originally hunters and gatherers too.

Thanks for sharing.
I have been making it a challenge for the little ones to find goodies around the cage for a while now and they really seem to enjoy the challenge and reward it is to investigate and find it.
It doesn't take much to really enrich their lives!

I have also found it makes them more interested in new additions to the cage, as if they think, there might just be some goodies hidden somewhere

I've set up the budgies' playground as a forage area.

Sweetie immediately was for it, but it took Lemon seeing Sweetie getting something she didn't have for her greedy little butt to try it out too hahaha
