Default Portions?

Hello All!

I have had Smol for a bit over a year now and after much MUCH work have been supplementing his diet with veg and pellets.

That's the key word here: supplementing.

His main food source at the moment is a seed mix called All Living Things Parakeet Daily Diet. The main ingredients are: White Millet, Canary Grass Seed, Oat Groats, Ground Corn, Red Millet, Wheat, and some dried carrots, papaya and egg. (It also contains pellets in the mix)

Smol gets around 3 teaspoons a day of this mix. The reason it's more than the 2 a day average is because he picks and chooses his favourite seeds in the mix. I know for a fact he doesn't eat the wheat or the added pellets. I upped his portion by a tsp because when he was first on this food he refused to eat these parts of it and ended up basically starving himself as protest.

But I digress.

Smol gets 1.5 tsp of this mix in the morning, plus .5 tsp of zupreem pellets, and another dish of pellets available to him all day (which he does munch on throughout the day) and in the evening the same. He also gets one veggie everyday, be it part of an asparagus stalk, a julienne piece of pepper, a piece of broccoli, etc.

SO.
My question is: what should my ideal portions be? And should Smol be only on the zupreem pellets as opposed to both seeds and pellets? The whole 60% 30% 10% thing confuses me to no end.

If you look through the stickies on healthy diet they might give you a bit more information but honestly, when it comes to 60/30/10% or whatever, I think you just need to relax a bit.

The main point is to limit the seed and then after theyve eaten them, theyre going to basically choose between the pellets and the fresh foods - if you had more than one bird then youd never know exactly who is eating how much of what.

Id try to offer more than one veg, if its the case that he only eats the preferred one, try grating/finely chopping them.

Its an ongoing battle with a lot of birds, but if hes also eating pellets and a range of vegetables then hes doing pretty well

Julia has given you some good advice and encouragement. I agree that it sounds like you have already made some good progress in getting your bird to be eating a healthy diet. There are more great stickies here: Diet and Nutrition - Talk Budgies Forums

Also, your profile picture of Smol is so adorable! He looks like a little marshmallow.

Goldenwing (and Lemon Drop)

P.S. I just realized that I seem to associate budgies with different foods (note my own bird's name). Not sure what that is all about.
