Hello, I haven’t been here in a while, but Cosmo is doing well and is a serious talker. He currently says “pretty bird”, mimics my whistle and clicks, “I’m a baby bird”, “hello, I’m Cosmo” and a general mix up of all those words like “I’m Cosmo, hello, pretty baby bird”. It’s so exciting!!
But the reason I’m here today is Cosmo will not eat anything but seeds. Nothing. I have tried everything there is mentioned to try. I have been trying to convert him to a pellet diet and he won’t even eat a single pellet. He won’t try any fruits or vegetables and he won’t even eat any millet unless it is the orange scented kind!! I’ve even tried pretending to eat his food. I’ve tried slowly reducing the amount of seed while increasing the pellets. I’ve even put pellets in his bird bath and he danced in them. He will not eat ANYTHING BUT SEED and it is driving me crazy. I think he would starve to death with food in his cage if it wasn’t seed. What else can I try!?
Try this method:
Soak your pellets in hot water until you have a mash. Press seeds into the pellet mash in an 80% seeds:20% pellets ratio. (For example, use 1/4 tsp of the mash and press 1 1/4 tsp of seeds into it). Once he's eating that reliably, start to reduce the amount of seeds down until you reach ~20% seeds. Then you can slowly decrease the water content to get him to eat the dried pellets.
You can sprout the seeds which will increase the nutritional value and may entice Coco to try some other vegetables as well.
You can also sprinkle Harrison's High Potency Mash over Coco's seed mix.
As he hulls his seed, he will get bits of the dried mash in his mouth which will help him get used to the taste so he begins to recognize the mash as a valid food source.
My Avian Vet recommended this method and it worked very well for me.
