Default Looking for a New Seed Brand

Hi all! Wow, long time no post! I'm trying to get all my birds on a new seed, starting with the budgies, and figured this would be the best place to turn.

Their current diet is as follows:

60% Harrisons Adult Lifetime Super Fine - 40% Hagen Original Blend Budgie Seed
Fresh veg daily and fruit every few days, treats like extra millet on occasion

I've been very disappointed lately with the quality of the Hagen seed as I've been getting lots of wood bits and rocks (also a few peas and corn even though that's not in the ingredients?). I know I've seen people who sprout their seed find Hagen works really well, and I have gotten it to sprout before, but I can really only do that in the summer as in the winter the air gets so dry that the sprouts don't seem to survive long.

My vet has also mentioned she doesn't like the quality of Hagen and recommended Dr. FosterSmith's blend, however when I went to order that one I discovered they have a $20.00 flat rate shipping to Canada making the $9.00 5lb bag $29.00.

After that failed I looked at the "Quality Seed Mix" sticky and went through the brands suggested there and that also didn't go well :/,

-Avigrain doesn't appear to ship to Canada or sell anywhere in Canada
-Volkman is prohibited from being shipped to Alberta
-Dr. Harvey's has nuts in it which I'm severely allergic to

Since none of those will work, I went through pet store websites and out of all those options made a list of the ones I think will be the best to choose from. I would like to either decide a seed out of this list or at least shorten the list so that when I see my vet on Monday I can go through them with her as well.

I'll list the things I assume is bad in red and good in green. Apologies in advanced that the ingredients make the post so long!

I also am able to get Kaytee, Sunseed Vita Prima, LM Farms, as well as Zupreem's seeds (Smart Selects, Pure Fun, and Sensible but they have the fruity pellets in them and I already feed Harrisons pellet). Some other brands available to me contain nuts so those are a no go.

Just based off ingredients I think the Versele-laga is the best bet besides the oyster shells, but I would love to know your opinions! Or if you know of any other seed brands I may be able to get please let me know as well and I'll check them out
Thank you!

Thank you for the suggestion! I hadn't seen that one but it does seems that all the American Amazon links don't ship to Canada and the ones on Canadian Amazon are unavailable or 25lbs

I did see the basic recipe for homemade seed in the "Quality Seed Mix" sticky, but I would have to check that all the ingredients are available to me. I think I would prefer a pre-made mix but I'm not against trying out homemade

I know this is a good site in Canada, unsure if they would ship to Alberta (they should I don't see why not) but worth a shot?

Thanks for the website, I haven't seen this one before! The Chin Ridge line looks pretty good but still has $16.00 shipping I don't mind a food with a higher price point but I'd rather be paying for the higher quality food than for shipment if that makes sense. But it's still good to have these options

Did your vet mention what it is that she doesn’t like about Hagen? I know they’re a big company who manufactures all sorts of pet products, and doesn’t concentrate on birds. But unless there have been recalls or something to potentially endanger your bird’s life, I wouldn’t worry too much if it is the one which is most accessible to you. The reason I say this, is it sounds like you’re feeding a balanced diet, where most of the real nutrition is coming from the pellets and veggies. I have a feeling your vet was just saying it in passing that it isn’t the best quality, but did she say to absolutely stop using it? If so, I’d call and ask what it is (and where to get it) that she suggests as a replacement. Good luck!
