Default Cheerios

Hello,
I wanted to try cheerios as I can put them on a zip tie and hang them in their house to snack on and I hope they would eat them?BUT........i just noticed the ones I bought have brown sugar in them. I bought the Publix brand honey nut cheerios and just noticed it has brown sugar in the ingredients

I will not give it to them until I know its 100% safe. It will be a treat, not the main diet. Can anyone assure me it is "safe" the brown sugar part worries me...

No, I would not feed them honey nut cheerios. Those have a lot of sugar in them and offer no nutritional advantages to them. It's best to limit their "human food" treats to healthy veggies

Mark, the link shows honey nut flavor. It is full of sugars. It’s not intended for budgies. It’s not a healthy treat.

thanks Not gonna give it to them I have trouble getting them to try things... I am a little successful with Peppy eating a mix of seed and Exact pellets. But Oz won't eat the pellets I'm trying veggies like carrots, broccoli, sweet potato, and squash. but no luck so far. did you also read my post about the issues with Oz?

I would not recommend giving Cheerios to your budgies.
You are much better off giving them healthy vegetables.
Even if they don't take to them right away, don't give up.
It can takes weeks or even months for budgies to try new foods.

Use the stickies at the top of the Diet and Nutrition section of the forum for tips on different ways to present foods to your birds.

Cheerios are not unsafe for your budgie, but as others have said there are more nutritious treats out there. If you were eating cheerios and your budgie nibbled on some out of your hand for fun to try it, that is probably fine. I wouldn't regularly offer it though.

As others have said, try offering more veggies, even occasional fruit. I use a metal skewer made to hang in the cage. It is just as easy as your zip tie idea with the cheerios. I can put chunks of carrot, apple, greens etc. My birds would never touch veggies or fruit until I used the skewer. Go figure...

There are other fun treats you can give your budgie, like birdie bread. There are mixes you can buy or recipes on the forums. I have found I can make a batch, cut into little squares, freeze most of it and bring a piece out sometimes. Apparently some people have had success with getting budgies to like the taste of pellets using the birdie bread because you can bake some into the bread.

The name,Cheerios, would sound rather nice for a budgies name. Lively, friendly name. I agree they are not to be eaten as budgie snacks.
