Default Foods to gain weight

Hi group, Jojo is still tweeting on the terra and I expect he will make a full recovery. If you saw my other post, Jojo was getting the wrong treatment and lost a lot of weight in two months.

What foods can I feed him that will help him gain weight?

He normally lives in a cage with three budgies, so I was always careful to portion out their food. Now, I don't want to be too restrictive.

I have bought Harrison's fine mash in the past, but none of the budgies care for it. I tried feeding it while he was sick and it was a no-go. My other budgie and cockatiel love Harrison's bird bread, but these guys don't, even though I offer it.

He loves Higgins protein egg food, so I give him a helping of that in the morning and afternoon.

He gets plain Hagen VME staple seed. I used to feed them Tropican and Budgie Gourmet, but once Jojo started having his health issues, I found they were lessened with "plain" seed.

He loves apple, celery, lettuce and parsley.

I'm willing to try anything! Perhaps there is something new that he will end up liking.

Try Harrison's High Potency Formula Mash.
You can sprinkle it dry on his seed.
You can also add flax seed and a few shelled sunflower bits to his seed mix. Both are higher in fats -- as is millet. Take a couple balls of millet and rub the seed off them into his other seed. You can also use a tiny bit of flax seed oil on the food if you wish.

Add a bit of other types of food to his diet such as orange, grape or pears.
Fruits are high in sugar and usually only given sparingly but since you are trying to have him gain a bit of weight you can try them a bit more often.

Don't give him too much protein as isn't good for him.
He shouldn't be getting that much egg food.
Only about 20% of a budgie's diet should be protein.

Try other vegetables for him as well.

Safe Foods for Budgies

Best wishes to little JoJo!

Thanks for the suggestions FaeryBee!

I do have flax powder and will add that. I almost forgot about it.

LOL, naturally the food he likes best is the one he should have the least of ;-D

Jojo is still tweeting on the terra by the way!
