Default Sudden death of my 3 year old budgie

A few days ago my beloved budgie Alice passed away. She had just turned 3 last month. She was sitting on a perch and suddenly fell down dead. She had not shown any signs of illness before she passed. I was distraught and chocked. I could not figure out what could have happened to her. I was afraid that there was something toxic in the environment or that she had some dangerous disease that would spread to the other birds. I held her for an hour and then I called my vet. I needed to find out what had happened to her, so I wrapped her up and put her in the fridge. I took her to the vet the next day to have a necropsy done on her.

The vet called me yesterday evening with the results. It wasn't anything as dramatic as toxins or some strange disease that had killed her She had died because she had fat around her inner organs and her system could not take the strain, so a vein ruptured. She died instantly. She did not look that fat on the outside. It was all on the inside, hidden.

I learned my lesson the hard way, providing a proper diet is absolutely the most important thing you can do for your budgie. A pudgy budgie is not cute or funny, it is a serious matter. I bet many budgie owners have lost their budgie this way, probably without ever finding out why they died. I have 2 more fat budgies in my flock of now 12 birds. I hope they will have a longer and better life than Alice did.

RIP my lovely Alice, I'm so sorry I failed you.

I am so sorry for what happened :/ You tried your best. I do have an advice for future reference, given to me by a breeder that sold me my budgie. It has to do with the crackers you clip onto the side of your cage.
The crackers, he said, are very high in calories. He advised me not to clip the whole thing on, but rather break off a small piece and put it in the cage so the parrot doesn't eat too much of it. I hope it helps

Thank you. The thing that I have a problem with in my flock, as so many others do, is seed addiction. Even now the birds are looking for seeds anywhere and everywhere even though they have healthy and nice vegetables to eat, they usually love peas. It has gone too fat with the seeds. All they can think of is seeds.

I'm very sorry to hear this... You have my deepest sympathies over your Alice's passing. May she rest in peace.

I hope with time and by implementing portion control when it comes to daily dosage of seeds, you will be able to improve your budgies' diet as far as balance and variety goes.

I am so sorry for your loss of Alice. This is making us more aware of the fact that just because a budgie isn't visually fat, that it means all is well on the inside. Many times budgies fall ill or pass because of things we can't outwardly see. RIP Alice, take care Sabine.

Sabine,

I'm so sorry for your loss of Alice.
Fly high soar free sweet Alice; rest peacefully darling girl.

Blessings to you during this very difficult time.

Hopefully, this thread will be a wake-up call for all members or the forum.

Anyone who has allowed their budgies to become seed junkies and/or overweight
-- the health risks are a very real problem that needs to be kept in the forefront of every owner's awareness.

Very sorry for your loss of Alice and it is especially sad for our precious little ones to fade so unexpectedly without any visible sign of ailment. Obesity is a very serious problem which one of my birds is also facing and is being treated for.

Rest in peace and fly high, little Alice

Sabine, I'm terribly sorry to hear of little Alice's death. She was obviously very much loved and will be missed.

Keep her memory close and she will never truly leave you.

Rest in peace, darling Alice. Sleep among the stars.

So sorry for your loss, Sabine. It's so disheartening when we find our little flighted loved ones have left us so suddenly. Often, we think as their humans, that maybe we did something to harm our beloveds but it is usually not the case. It is so hard to know when they are about to leave us or if they are unwell. I am sure you have done everything you could to have given Alice the best home to live out her days.

Rest in Peace, Alice, and may you be free and happy in your little spirit
