Hi all, My Budgie got really sick over the past weekend. (Sam) started off with diarrhea, ruffled feathers, and a hard tail-bobbing. He is about 9 years old. I know hes very old. I have had two Budgies in the past that lived to 14 and 12 years. So I have a lot of experience as an owner.
Where I live in Michigan Avian specialists aren't around in my general area. I called several Veterinary's in my city and none had an avian specialists. However, I have a referral to call one tomorrow about 70 miles away. But tomorrow may be too late.
So today he is totally off balance and cannot perch at all. He is lying very still on his chest at the bottom of the cage. I have increased the heat and humidity in the room and have him covered. I have saw him try to eat seed I have put at bottom of cage. Not sure if he is drinking water so I have started to administer through an eye drop.
Now I have video and pictures but not sure how to attach. Its almost like he has had a stroke. But he is old and it got cold here. He may have caught a bug. Now I have some questions.
I have antibiotics here. I have doxycycline, Flagyl, and I have Omnicef. These are prescribed to me as I fight my own illness. But without knowing whats going on with Sam and not knowing how much longer he has left. I am thinking about making some sort of diluted antibiotic mix to give to him. In some sort of corn syrup suspension.
My past birds when sick were giving Baytril by a now retired avian doctor. I can only find info on Flagyl, and doxy to give to Budgies and not Omnicef.
But I really dont know how much as he is such a small Budgie.
It may be just his time. But I hate to see this going on. Don't like to see him struggle. If anyone has any experience with these antibiotics please let me know dosage, etc.
Going to try and upload a video. PS he did squawk loudly and repetitiously when i had to grab him to give water.
Thank You Goldenwing. Doing a little more reading on antibiotic to use on Budgies. I'm not a doctor but he is really sick. So Im at the point I need something fast. Of course it might not be a bacterial infection. Could be a viral, or fungus or just old age.
Thank You for the kind comments, Its been a tough day here today. crazy waking up I walk upstairs out of habit to uncover the bird cage. Only to realize he's gone. But at least the suffering he had is over. I'm glad it only lasted 2 days with the second day being the worse. Now a lot more quiet. I do have a cat to keep me company.
