Default Scared for my budgie, bald spots on head (pics included)

Hi there,

Yesterday I noticed two bald patches on my budgies head. He's been molting the last week, so I originally assumed it was that. But, today I woke up and it seems that his feathers are receding by his cere. He's 5 1/2 years old, and been in perfect health all his life. He shows no changes in behavior other than being tired and bit cranky (which I assume is due to the molting.)

I check his head and saw a bunch of pin feather, but none once I got to the bald spot. He wouldn't stay still enough for me to really look in that area, but what I saw for a split second was little white dots. I'm going to take him to the vet, but I'm going out of town tonight for a few days (I have someone to take care of him while I'm gone), but i'm worried to even leave him and for someone to
either calm my worry or tell me something is wrong or what it may be.

Hi there and to the forums!

Your little one is very sweet He's going through what we call a "miserable moult", which means that a lot of his feathers in one specific place are growing back all at once. He'll grow them in soon enough

He's probably going to be slightly more withdrawn than usual as it's not overly comfortable for so many feathers to be growing in, so keep that in mind.

Here's a link with more information:

You've been given great advice about your budgie's molt. However, I noticed in the picture that he appears to be in a round cage, is this the case? Round cages really aren't good for birds- there are no corners they can hide in and because of the shape of the bars near the top it is very easy for them to get their feet caught. His cage also looks to be too small for even one budgie. I would highly recommend you get a rectangular cage that is at the minimum 18x18x18 inches. These threads have more information:
