Default Budgie going through a reeeeeeally long molt?

Hey all,

Have you ever known a budgie to have pin feathers on his head and body for three months or more? My Charlie (10 years old) seems to be stuck in a molt, although he doesn't seem sick (he has gotten sick before so I know the signs), he's as eager as ever for his fusses and he's not losing feathers at any kind of unusual rate within a molt.

He has experienced very long molts before (can't say for sure how long) and has french molt, which is why I haven't taken him to the vet thus far as unusual feather growth has not been that unusual. The only environmental factor I can think of is the fact that our weather here has been so erratic... we had a heat wave in April and this past week has been really cold before getting really warm again.

What do we think?

Thanks,
Paul

How many hours of daylight is Charlie getting?
Are you using a full-spectrum light?
The reason I ask about the full-spectrum light is that when budgies are given more than about 1 or 1 1/2 hours of (artificial) full-spectrum lighting per day it can send them into perpetual molts.

The fact that Charlie has/had French Molt and has made it to 10 years old is GREAT, by the way!!

Thanks, I work from home so he's had a lot of attention.

I can't honestly say how much artificial light he's been getting but I don't think it would be that much currently because it's light when he gets up and it doesn't go dark very long before his bedtime. But that's something I'll keep an eye on, thanks.

It's the actual "full-spectrum" lighting that I'm referring to which can be a problem -- Not just regular artificial lights.

Please see the information in the link below.

You're welcome.

Best wishes to Charlie.
Hope the really long molt ends soon for him.
