Default Alkira obsessively ripping his feathers

Hi guys, Iím hoping that someone can shed some light on why Alkira is suddenly obsessively, roughly ripping at his feathers? It started yesterday and went on all day and seems to have started again today. He has pulled so hard at times that his lost his balance and fallen off his perch. Thereís no bald patch on the area heís tugging at nor are there feathers falling as heís pulling. He is moulting though, so maybe itís just a new feather or 2 bothering him? Should I be worried?

Is it just that one area on his upper chest that he keeps pulling at? If so my first thought is that there is something really bothering him in the area, will he take a bath enough to wet the area, maybe that would help relieve whatever he may be feeling. Or if it's just one spot can you hold him to get a look at the skin in that area ? Hopefully it's just molt related but if it continues I would have him looked at by the vet, especially if he is spending a lot of time pulling and picking.

It looks like he's just really itchy - if the behavior doesn't go away for a few days then I'd be more worried Hope his moult is over fast!

Poor Akira! He does look really itchy or like something is bothering him in that specific spot. Hope he is able to get some relief.

Thank you for the prompt replies. That area on his neck is the spot that is bothering him the most but from time to time, he goes to his wings and gives them a good preen too- not as roughly as in the video, but more rough than his usual preening. He loves bathing (in his tiny water bowl rather than in his big bath), and has had a few decent dunks. He seems loads better this afternoon, not pulling his feathers anywhere near as often so hopefully he will continue to improve and by tomorrow the behaviour will have stopped altogether.

Kellie,

How is Alkira doing today?

That was definitely some rough pulling on his chest/neck feathers yesterday!

I hope the spot isn't bothering him as much now.

Alkira was great all of yesterday afternoon and so far this morning (it’s only 9.15am at the moment so he hasn’t been up long). He’s still preening that’s spot more than anywhere else, but I’ve not seen him get as rough as he was the other day. Oddly though, as I type this, he’s put himself back to bed. As you know, Alkira is extremely active and full on and usually when he gets up in the morning, he spends the first hour or so throwing his ball around. He did this for only a few minutes and is now sitting quietly on his swing. Hopefully it’s just moulting and nothing more, but I’ll keep a close eye on him.
