Default Scaly Mites?

Hello,
New member here. About 3 months ago, I saw a little yellow and green bird in my backyard hopping around. Turned out it was a loose budgie. We were able to capture her and then advertised around the neighborhood for a lost bird with no one coming forward. Myself and the children are now really into this bird and have hand tamed her (was very nippy for about 8 weeks) and all is going well. The only issue is that we've noticed her cere has taken on a scaly appearance so I am attaching a close up photo. Does this look like scaly mites? I've also noticed a bit of tail bobbing and a bit of grooming (not sure how much is too much). Thanks for any assistance!

No worries that is not scaly face mites. When a female is in breeding condition the cere will turn brown and sometimes get flaky looking which is what you are seeing.

Hi there and to the forums!

What a cute little girl. I'm so glad you were able to be there for her to rescue her!

Meanwhile, you've come to a great place to stay updated on the best of budgie care practices and it's lovely to have you join us. I agree totally with Cody, her cere looks normal

Be sure to read through the forums' many budgie articles and "stickies" to ensure you're up to date on everything! If you have any questions after doing so, feel free to ask as we'd love to help.

I can't wait to see more of her around here!

Thank you for the help Cody and StarlingWings! That makes sense as her cere has also recently changed from a light pink to brown. It's really been a joy having her in our home - quite an unexpected blessing.

Thank you for rescuing the little budgie and for giving her a safe and loving home.
She is adorable and Cody and Star's responses to you were spot-on!

What have you named your little one?

We actually named her Orville. This is when we thought she was a male. Now we just call her Orvie.

Here’s a pic of the day we found her in our backyard. That’s my son holding her. We were able to get a laundry basket over her followed by some garden bird netting. It took weeks before she would allow us to hold her again. I think she must have been pretty desperate and weak at this point.

I feel that we were equally lucky that we found each other.
