This is a "Guide" full of ideas, tips and hints for easy home-made foraging, shredder and treat toys that will provide lots of fun, mental stimulation and even exercise for your budgies and other birds too! :D

You Will Need:

Home-made treats (Other treats work too)

Millet

Shredding materials like: Shredders, Corn husks (fresh or dried)

Different types of cords and ropes like: Sisal rope, Hemp cord, Cotton rope

Toilet paper, paper towel and other rolls cut into different lengths (Make sure they are bird safe)

Random toy parts and quick links

Paper towels, newspaper, any kind as long as it is bird safe (I use paper from bird toy shipments)

Scissors of course!

What To Do:

Millet Cages (As i call them)

1. Cut the paper towel rolls into many thin rings.
2. Overlap the rings until you get a strong ball/cage.
3. Stuff it with millet through the openings left.

This is what they look like:

Foraging treat gifts and candies

1. Cut squares of paper in different sizes.
2. Cut different sizes of cord (I used hemp cord).
3. Stuff the rolls cut into different lengths with treats and/or millet.
4. Wrap with paper.
5. Tie them tightly with cord.

I broke my home-made treats into tiny pieces to make them fit.

What they look like:

Home-Made Treats Recipe

1 cup seed mix
1 or 2 eggs
1 Tbs peanut butter (All natural)
1 Tbs brown sugar

- Preheat oven for 10 minutes @ 350° F
- Mix it all together, make sure all seeds are soaked.
- Place small portions in cupcake cases.
- Place cupcake case on cookie sheet and into the oven.
- Heat for 20 - 25 minutes @ 350° F
- When they are toasty and start smelling good then it means they are...

Ready!

Serve and enjoy. (Birds only)

Tips and Hints:
- Make a hole through them and hang in cage.
- You can also add cuttle bone pieces, millet and other treats to the mixture, not just seeds!

WARNING: These toys are meant to be destroyed so they won't last long!

SERIOUS WARNING: Do not leave any long loose strings. Make sure to tie everything tightly. Lose strings can be dangerous as bird feet can get caught!

Supervise your birds as they play with these toys. Make sure to dispose of destroyed toys.

Do you guys use the all natural peanut butter or the run of the mill skippy? I worry a bit about all the sugar and salt added to the normal peanut butters. I used to eat the all natural, so it wouldn't be a big deal to get some for my baby. Curious as to what you all do?

Just don't use it at all. You can have either honey, peanut butter or both and I used both, but using only one of the two will be fine. It just adds a sweet taste to the treats and the budgies like it. I've never made them without the peanut butter so please tell me how the turn out :D

I rather make them treats than buying them in the store because I know what I put in them! You never know for sure what they put in store bought treats.

Yesterday I made the one with the rings from a toilet paper tube - that forms a ball with a Nutriberry in the centre - right now they're walking around it like it's explosive -LOL! It won't take long I'm sure :)
